Bread, one of my favorite things! *drool*
I wasn't surprised at the person sent home either. Their final creation looked great, even if it lacked flavor.

Perfect - liking Matt more and more! Yes, no quarrel with the winner or the one going home. I, too, was surprised to see Mark's daughters there - happy for him that that could happen.
I'm surprised the showstoppers weren't required to be stand up or 3-D as they have been in previous seasons.
Ah...new info - while rainbow bread came from the U.S., over in the U.K. it symbolizes the National Health System - yay for the acknowledgement!

Lol. I was like, stick some butter on it. Whammo - flavour. It was nice of Linda to use Mak’s honey as he didn’t get the chance. Shame they didn’t comment on it at judging (at least that they showed).

I don't think I saw them use any of the spreads and, as was logically said, whammo - flavor.

Did they remark on many of the butters either? I found that a little odd since it was part of the challenge requirements.

We see them use the spreads on some of the breads, but they hardly comment on them at all.
The overall editing seems so rushed to me in these later seasons... less lingering on moments, no side field trips or history lessons, it's so very down to business...

Nooo! I'm upset at the one sent home this week, I really liked them. Stupid raw cake.
How did so many people have trouble making brownies, of all things?

Yup, this week's elimination was a heartbreaker. One of the frontrunners had a bad couple of days.

Yeah, I'm confused by the brownies as well. All you need is some chopped walnuts in the batter and you're good to go.
Ah, I liked Sura, but she did have a bad week. I remember her saying in the beginning that she hated chocolate and, I guess, it showed. Congrats to Mark, though, that was a pretty cake.
{{confession: I hate WHITE chocolate and don't know if I could have worked with it.}}

I don't like white chocolate either, especially that much of it in one dish. Ugh.

I luv white chocolate but I don't particularly like some of the showstoppers. I would be very hesitant to eat them.
The brownie round was horrific.
I am not surprised Sura left.
I do wonder though, that if you watch older seasons the products were exquisite but I haven't seen that finis much this season.
Liking the new host though.

I was thinking the same thing -- nobody has really baked a "blow your mind exquisite" piece yet. The overall level of output has been a little meh so far. The bakers have more snark for the cameras, but they aren't coming through in the end as expected.

This week's elimination got me in the feels. Unfortunately, unlike Mak (which decision I still question) raw cake is raw cake, and that along with a lackluster Signature and Technical bake was enough to send her home.

After the 2 bad days of baking including raw cake, it was not a surprise she went home. However, I really liked her and wanted her to go further.
I wonder if them not going home and only practicing for a day or two is making the difference in the level of showstoppers.
They tried to do too much with their brownies. Too much stuff. Don't ruin good brownies with putting everything but the kitchen sink in the pan.
I don't particularly care for white chocolate either, so not a single one of those showstoppers looked appealing to me. However, I love chocolate and hazelnut so that babka looked delicious. I do want to try that.
Eta: why, oh why can't they give them air conditioning in the tent for chocolate week? I don't believe they can't find a super quiet one.

Babka made me think of that Seinfeld episode where they had to settle for cinnamon babka aka lesser babka. Liked the first two challenges though I was wishing someone would just make some normal brownies, not sticking popping candy and meringue on them. And brownies should not have frosting, frosting is for cakes. Also I never get the gooey descriptor for brownies ....that just makes me think of liquid and brownies don’t have liquid centres unless they have caramel or something. Brownies should be fudgy. Anyways, enough about brownies! I don’t like white chocolate so I’d give everything in the showstopper round a miss. And I agree with others about things not really looking showstopping. Sad about Sura. I like Lottie too but I’d prefer her to have gone (though it was fair and right for Sura to be eliminated).

I love white chocolate but mostly in candy; it's very hard to bake with but very nice when done right.
I rewatched last night and I noticed something; Lottie said that she had practiced either the Signature or Showstopper bake "around 17 times." Also, the guy who made the showstopper for his brother's graduation said that he made that paticular cake for his brother's actual graduation. So I think that even though they get a couple of days between the challenges to practice they also got the specs for the Signature and Showstopper ahead of time this year so they could practice at home.

I don't think the theme of Signature and Showstopper have ever been a secret. They have to know far enough in advance to tell the crew what ingredients they need, and they don't know what ingredients they'll need until the know what the end product is supposed to be. It's the Technical they get hit with cold. I SO respect these home bakers who get a set of instructions that say "Make a genoise sponge." Period. And most of them just get to work like it's something they do every day (for most of them, I guess they DO). It's the specific instructions (how to braid something, for example) that get the finished product all over the map.

It was my understanding that they got the briefs for the Signature and Showstoppers a week in advance. This time, it seems like they got more time.

Just picked up a chocolate babka from a REAL local bakery.
Oh.
My.
Goodness.

Trader Joes makes a chocolate babka that is INSANE, so I can imagine how one fresh from the bakery must taste!

The catering company that delivers meals had what they called a chocolate square last week. Other than the frosting on top, it could have been a cakey brownie with chopped walnuts. I had posted all you need in a brownie is walnuts and that is what I got for a desert this week.

That was Ruby and she put him on blast too.
I'm not going to blame Lottie for it because quite frankly she seems uncomfortable with his attention, especially when he comes by her without Pru.

I just got through watching that season on repeat on PBS and Ruby ranks as my least favorite contestant ever. She was s good baker and did win Star a few times, but I wonder how much of that was Paul and how much was real.

Okay, I watched it and it's much ado about nothing. Lottie actually had a half-decent week, plus the person who went home had a subpar Signature and Showstopper and was last on the Technical. As for some of their other arguments? Big whoop; she combed her hair to look presentable to the panel for judging. That's not something to pick on someone for! I tend to not put much stock in the Daily Fail (especially since the comment section is overrun by women who hate other women) but yeah. The only thing that did ring true is that they seem to have their "favorites" that they graviate to; last season Noel was always around that Witchy Poo lady, and this season he's around Sura and Lottie a lot. Paul seems to go around Lottie, Hermoine, and the guy who is a good baker. The person who seems to not get similar treatment is the person who won Star Baker this week, and I have a few (not so nice) theories as to why. They tend to show the standard "Okay, what are you baking" shots with all four of them with her, and I've NEVER seen her singled out for special attention, unlike some of the others.

Yeah, I don't know what the author of the article was talking about. She for certain wasn't bottom 3 in the technical challenge. They didn't mention her as bottom 3 choice to go home. I didn't think, according to what they said, that she should have been bottom 3 either. It seemed fairly obvious who was going home, as well as who else didn't do well. Lottie certainly got both good and critical remarks, but so did most of them.
I thought the cages were supposed to taste good as well, but I don't think they tasted them. It seemed odd they didn't taste them since usually everything is supposed to be edible.

I closely watched the episode after reading this especially the interactions between Paul and Lottie. What the heck are these viewers seeing? Are there extra episodes not aired in the US? I didn't see anything. Every time there is an attractive female on this show the viewers automatically see Paul showing favoritism and having an affair. When I was more into writing detailed posts, after reading up on the standards by how baking judges judge the products Paul and Prue's decision's make sense. They are looking at the overall presentation, the texture of the bake and the flavor. If you go by your favorites well that will never match the judges decisions.
