Oh my goodness, they definitely went for personalities this season because everyone is delightful! I have to admit some of those showstoppers were hot messes, lol.

Luv'ed that Paul gave two handshakes and he looked to Prue to see if it was OK to do. Ah...the minute Maisam finished early in the showstopper I had a feeling her bake was too simple in comparison with the others.

Maisam always had that "deer in the headlights" look to her... but then so did Nadya at first in her season...

I think he looked at Prue cause she was speaking and he was interrupting her with his handshake…she told him it was ok, to go ahead. The two who made chocolate feathers for their biscuits. 🤣 Some of those masks…the parrot one especially…terrific. I think Rebs got a lucky reprieve this week. She needs to pull herself up if she’s going to continue.

I loved everyone's macarons this week. There were some very unique offerings, especially the savory one that Saybira created.
I laughed so hard at the people who put "feathers" on top of their cookies in the Technical.
Some of those masks were fabulous and looked like they tasted great. Maisam was such a sweet girl, I was sad to see her go home. Very happy for Maxy though; loved her daisy macarons and her showstopper was fantastic. Glad that Trashcan Carol has survived another week!

I appreciate that Rebs has started over with a couple of her bakes when things haven’t turned out quite right along the way. That takes guts (as she runs out of needed time for cooling, decorating, etc) but I agree that she needs to get it together a bit more or she’s gonna be on her way out.

This was Paul's week (bread) and for once it was quite interesting! The signature bake was to create 2 Pizzas with their choice of toppings and there were a lot of really interesting flavors going on; everything from lamb and onion (Maxy) to a English breakfast (Janusz) to something interesting with figs? Sandro also made a really good pizza with pineapple, peppers, and Spanish chorizo with a bbq sauce.
For the Technical Challenge, the bakers had two hours and 45 minutes to bake a dozen identical pain aux raisins. This was easier for some of the bakers than others, and at least one had the dreaded "tail" on his rolls.
For the Showstopper Challenge, the bakers were asked to make their version of a Swedish Smorgastarta in four and a half hours. The smorgastarta is a savory celebration sandwich cake. It has layers of sliced bread, savory fillings, and savory decorations. The bakers needed to be careful not to choose fillings that were too wet or risk the bread becoming a soggy mess. The judges expected it to look like a cake but taste like a sandwich. I gave Dawn the side eye for leaving coriander, sesame, and other traditional herbs out of her "Greek" Smorgastarta and Paul did too because how do you leave out those things in a Greek dish? Call it something else then!
Dawn wasn't the only person in trouble. Kevin's Smorgastarta literally looked like it was wilting and the bread was dry. Unsurprisingly, Janusz, Maxy, and Syabira all rose to the occasion and made wonderful Smorgastarta. Star Baker wasn't a surprise and the decision to not send someone home was the fairest thing they could do under the circumstances. It turned out to be a good thing for some of those folks because there were at least two people I would have sent home on pure performance this week.

I swear I’ve seen the smorgastarta before. Did they do it a previous season? Or maybe it was on another country’s version of the show. Either way..no. I don’t want my sandwich to be “frosted” on the outside and given to me as a cake slice. Don’t see the appeal.
I think it was fair not to have an elimination this week with two bakers out sick. I guess next week (or one of the weeks) they will have two people eliminated.

Probably wanted to do something savoury as they had sweet in the first and third challenges. Wasn’t my favourite week. Not a fan of tres leches so was meh at the showstopper.

Oh, man...that was....something. :/ They went full British with this, and I don't mean that as a compliment. I felt my soul leave my body several times, including the sombrero and sarape bit and when I saw someone PEELING an unripe avocado like a potato. Also, the peppers that baker was saying was "extremely hot"...really aren't. With that said, Pan de Luce and Tres Leche were good choices this week because they can be notoriously fiddly. Some of the showstoppers were extremely beautiful and well thought out and overall it was fun. Congrats to Maxy for a well-deserved Star Baker! I have to say I am very disturbed at how they handled one of the people who went home. The literally filmed that person melting down, and I was so glad that Maxy and some of the others got up and shielded them from the cameras because my heart was breaking for her. At least the BBC edited out that sort of thing, but Channel 4 has no shame.

I like tres leches cake but it can't be done with multi tiers. The cakes I have had are like a sheet pan. Otherwise the soak doesn't stay with the cake. And yes, it does ooze out. And if they wanted to do savory, I'm sure there were plenty of options besides a taco. Even make 6 corn and 6 flour tortillas and judge those. Or they could have made sopes.

Season 13 Episode 4 - "Mexican Week" - air date October 4, 2022 Signature: 12 pan dulce - two and a half hours, must contain yeast. Pan dulce are Mexican sweet breads. Technical: 8 Mexican Tacos Showstopper: Tres Leche Cake - four hours. Tres leches cakes are sponges soaked in three milks: evaporated milk, condensed milk and double cream. Their cakes had to have at least four layers which is a big challenge due to tres leches cakes being quite delicate and potentially collapsing. Baker | Signature | Technical | Showstopper | Abdul | Coconut & Raspberry Besos | 6th | ‘Day of the Dead' Tres Leches Cake | Carole | Orange & Anise Seed Pan Dulce | 10th | ‘Pastel De Chocolate Mexicano’ Tres Leches Cake | Dawn | 'Dark Chocolate & Chilli Kick' Conchas | 5th | ‘Blooming’ Tres Leches Cake | James | 'Coffee Caramel Oyster' Conchas | 8th | Chocolate & Lime ‘Many Leches’ Cake | Janusz | Cactus Conchas | 7th | ‘Fruity Horchata’ Tres Leches Cake | Kevin | 'Sweet Breads are Made of These' Borrachitos | 4th | ‘Meci-Cocoa Pyramid’ Tres Leches Cake | Maxy | 'Bella Naranja' Conchas | 1st | ‘Cocoa Flower Fiesta’ Tres Leches Cake | Rebs | Lemon Conchas | 9th | ‘Mexican Tiramisu’ Tres Leches Cake | Sandro | Filled Concha Buns | 3rd | ‘It’s a Fiesta’ Tres Leches Cake | Syabira | Corn on the Cob Conchas | 2nd | Sweetcorn & Cinnamon Tres Leches Cake |
This was an interesting episode as the bakers were all over the place and it was very hard to see who was doing well or not. The signature bake is always a lesson in how to bake bread from Paul. The Taco technical was fun just from how the Brits pronounce "tacos". The difficulties were in baking the taco shell properly and not overfilling the taco. I about died when I saw either Carole or Dawn peel the avocado. OMGosh she will have gotten a lot of ribbing over that. Was it also Carole who cut up the flank steak into nuggets to cook? I don't get the Tres Leches Cake ... you don't put milk in the dough but do in afterwards to make it moist? Wouldn't it be easier to put it in the dough? I don't know how authentically Mexican the showstoppers were, but some looked really yummy. Janusz had the best looking cake with Maxy second. Janusz, Maxy, Sandro, and Syabira are the standouts of the competition so far with Dawn occasionally making into the top five. Not surprised that James and Rebs were eliminated this week. Per Paul H, James had a bad week. Rebs seemed to let the stress of the tent get to her. Highlight of the judging was Paul giving Dawn the full on blue eye stare. I think he was having an orgasm in his mouth eating her cake. I do like it when the production team tries to do different things with the themes each week. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it does not. I don't think Mexican week with be used again but it was interesting to see the bakers try to deal with it.

I didn't have a problem with them showing that or filming that. The cast is always supportive of each other and that is exactly what they did, they went and comforted Rebs. Even Paul had kind words for her. Oh, is this one those times we just simply disagree? I have to say Rebs looked like she was on the edge the entire episode. I could almost see her mentally panicking and was not surprised she broke down crying.

I liked the episode ok. Not my favorite but I thought the signature and show stopper were fun. I am not a big fan of tres leches so didn't really think they can't be tiered but makes sense why it can't. I know you baked the tacos but still felt like a not very baking show stopper so that was the only one I didn't love. Someone up thread said maybe make corn and flour - I think that one could have been adjusted a bit.
I also didn't think the Rebs thing was in poor taste. As an emotional person and a crier, but not an empath. . . other criers always help me feel what they are feeling. I am emphasize with her letting it all out. And I appreciate her sharing her genuine emotions, definitely made me like feel for her and I liked her. And seeing everyone support her was also great!
One of the things that make me love TGBBS is that everyone is kind and sweet and its pretty drama free.

It's completely fair; some people like the realness in reality TV and don't mind seeing outbursts of emotion because it makes it even more relatable, while others like myself feel like airing people's meltdowns as being kinda exploitative. Both are valid points of view.

I hope this was the first AND last Mexican Week, at least in this form. It was a rare instance of the show half-assing a theme. The bakers soldiered through it, though. I don't know how Paul and Prue didn't feel sick after tasting the extremely rich sweetness of all those showstoppers.
Seeing a week like this also makes me miss Mel and Sue as hosts -- they relied on their wit for humor, not elaborate sight gags. Plus their puns were more clever. And they seemed more engaged with the bakers, even helping them out by being an extra pair of hands for small tasks sometimes. Noel and Matt choose to clown around and crack jokes. They seem to care about the camera as much as the bakers.
Even when announcing Star Baker, Mel & Sue would make an effory to personalize the moment and tease what the Star Baker did before announcing the name. Noel & Matt just say, "The person who is Star Baker is...". I'm kind of hoping for new hosts next season.

I was not impressed with any of the items I bought, absolutely no flavor. I also went to Krispy Kreme for the first time and bought 6 doughnuts for $13.96. Two were the standard glazed doughnut, two were pumpkin spice cake doughnut, and 2 were cinnamon buns. OMG, there were expensive as heck. They all tasted terrible. All were smothered in a sugar glaze. The cake doughnut was OK but it was tiny and it did not need the sugar syrup. The sugar glaze at least had some height. But the cinnamon bun were chewy and became rubbery the longer you chewed. The CBun looked squashed and covered with a shield of sugar. I do not get the love for Krispy Kreme the doughnuts are terrible and the price is outrageous for a terrible product. Those Tres Leche Cakes kinda reminded me of Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

I have always enjoyed those cakes. I think American palates are just different. I have heard people say they can't stand German baked goods because they just don't taste right. Now, I haven't had a KK in ages. When they first opened out here there were lines. The place nearest closed a few years later. I'm not a donut person overall. If I do have one, I like a plain cake.

I think libgirl's description of tres leche being kinda "cake pudding" is pretty accurate. It's nothing like a Krispy Kreme (where the best doughnuts are the plain glazed ones).
I've heard people say they dislike German desserts too but they taste just fine to me!

I've heard people say they dislike German desserts too but they taste just fine to me! German desserts just came up on an Aldi grocery store page. They have these chocolate dominos that are so good but so many people say they aren't sweet, the taste is weird.... they are a German cookie, like a petit four. I can't get enough of them.
