^ Liam, one of the fan favourites from the season last aired in the UK (and airing now in Canada) hosted the latest edition of Bake Off: The Professionals (previously known as Bake Off: Creme de la Creme) that can be found on some online sites if you search. It is from the same production team as Bake Off/Baking Show but the judges and format are different (teams of professional pastry chefs) but they do make some beautiful desserts. The judges, however, are not nice and so it has a very different feel from regular Bake Off/Baking Show (bakers are still nice).

Episode 5 - Pies
Wow, watching this was amazing, I can't believe the issues everyone had. I mean there is usually at least one disaster per challenge but this was more like hoping there could at least be one good bake per challenge.
Ryan - amazing to go from bottom to Star Baker, that is a first. He flavor profiles save him.
Absolutely shocked/gobsmacked that Sarah Jane did not go home as she seems to have disaster after disaster and Minisha did.
Brendan - yes, doing well this week.
Luv'ed, luv'ed, luv'ed the judges comments about the "American sweet pie" being too sweet. I normally cannot stand pecan pie as it is all sugar. Hate when people make a sweet potato pie or casserole and add sugar, maple syrup and marshmallow. It is sweet already. I don't get pumpkin pie at all. Most grocery bakeries are awful. The sheet cakes folks bring in to work have not taste, no flavor and are covered with sugar frosting. Any pie I have ever tasted whether it is peach, apple and cherry has no flavor, this is why I like watching this series as the judges are always talking about the flavors.

I laughed at how disdainfully they regarded "American" pie---apparently too sweet for British tastes. I can't imagine what the pretty dark haired girl did to her peanut butter and chocolate pie that made them hate it.....that is a favorite combination here...maybe that was the problem....too American. Have we ever seen a star baker be last in one of the challenges and get to be the star. His pie must have been spectacular. They said her peanut butter had no taste. huh? What did she do to it to strip away the flavor? They really must have a different palate because I notice they use fruits with added flavor a lot. Also more spice type flavors than American bakers might use. But, then, I'm old fashion with with liberal use of brown sugar. I don't notice brown sugar on their benches, mostly treacle instead. I mean ginger in a key lime pie? I think I saw her spooning PB out of a jar of Jif. She should have used Skippy Super Chunk. LOL. Folks on another board I frequent said that it looked like she just globbed PB out of a jar right into the pie. It would have been better if she'd have included it as part a mousse-like texture. And eliminated the pumpkin.

I'm going to have to check this out.

I do like the idea of making a mousse like filling that would have been great.

So I was watching something on CBC tonight and there was a commercial for the new season of The Great British Baking Show. It showed a new cast and it is listed as 2018. It starts Wednesday at 8pm. I'm not sure if those outside of Canada can view it, but they have episodes up of the Canadian version that I can view, so if anyone is interested they might give it a try. My DVR recorded it in Seattle.
I had already seen the first 4 episodes of the newest season while flying with British Airways last spring. Super good. The new judges and hosts fit right in. Seamless.
Who is the new male host? I get the lady, she is some baker, but who is he? And do you know why Mary is no longer there? I'm in heaven. I now get two days of baking each week...the British and the Canadian show!!!

Does anybody know the audition process for this show? They advertise it as some of the best bakers in Britain....but frankly, it don't always see that. Well, weird things can happen with a stove that you're unfamiliar with. Apparently, the process is a drawn out affair now which I can see because the quality of the bakes gets better with each season. Also, I believe the weather conditions affect the outcome. Heck, they're baking in a tent!

He's also done other assorted roles over the years. He's done a great deal of radio work as well. He's one of those familiar faces that pop up on British TV from time to time.

His pie looked delicious.

If nothing else I hope this show gives Sarah Jane lots of confidence as it is very obvious she has none.

I think she is lovely. She is a stay at home mom in a Pastor's family in a small parish. I hope this experience does boost her confidence once she returns to washing school uniforms on her weekends.

I know she is a stay at home mom, but in one of the previous episodes she said how brave it was just to get on the train by herself to come to the competition. Then I see her being incredibly hard on herself if her bakes are not good.

Is she not allowed to go outside the house by herself? Or does she have an anxiety or panic condition that prevents her from living life to its fullest? Words cannot express...how sad this is.

When you have a type of crippling anxiety, getting on a train by yourself is a big deal. And another clue is how hard she is on herself. I wish her the best.

Myself and many viewers were rather bummed in the sixth season (what this channel and Netflix calls season 3) when, during bread week, contestant Paul didn't win due to not doing well in the technical but having had a superb signature bake and then that lion showstopper that judge Paul could not stop raving about (saying it was probably the best thing done on bread he had ever seen), whereas in this one, Ryan had two bad bakes but won due to an excellent showstopper, so it just feels skewed. Probably an example of "Early Installment Weirdness".

So I am watching the second episode of the latest British version with the new cast. It's biscuit week. They had to do sandwich biscuits with a filling and then had to make a board game out of biscuits.
I just realized they are not doing any technical challenges. They didn't do it last week either. I rather miss those because they were usually things that were new to me and it is the only thing that they all have to bake. I got a better idea of their skills because they were all making the same thing. It was like a puzzle they had to figure out from limited instructions.
I don't mind the new cast, but I do miss that technical challenge. I wish they would bring that back.

I think you're watching an edited version because they most definitely did technical challenges every week for that season..

I don't know why they would edit the technical challenge out? What is the point? It would be one thing if they were shortening the episode, but it is still an hour. Unless it is longer when shown in the UK?

CCL and I commented on the old FoRT about the different bakes, technical, and showstoppers without giving away who went home or the winner because we wanted to discuss the show but not spoil it for others who couldn't see it.

I just went to the CBC site and they did show the technical, at least on the website. . The technical for biscuit week was fortune cookies. I can’t think why they would have the technical on the website video but wouldn’t show it when airing on tv? It was also an hour long with commercials in the UK as I recall so they wouldn’t need to cut things out to fit commercials in an hour-long broadcast. Maybe watch it via the website rather than tv if the tv broadcast is cutting out the technical?

I'm multitasking when watching, but I wondered last week as well because I don't remember the technical and so I paid closer attention this week. I PVR'd and then played it back to make sure I didn't miss it. That is weird … or I am spacing out.

Back to PBS: Poor John, what a way to go out. Sarah Jane dodged a knife slice because he had to leave.
I don't think I will ever understand the concept of British puddings as opposed to deserts. Watching the strudel dough stretching was fascinating.

I felt so bad for John last night. His strudel was shaping up to look amazing, too...and then to go out like that. Hurray for Brendon for winning Star Baker, but Danny did well too and was a contender. I'm glad the judges made the decision they did because I didn't want to see James or Sarah Jane go home and of course she goes off into hysterics once the decision is made. She's at a 9 and I need her between a 4 and 5.
