What I absolutely love about GBBO is that they are diverse but it is not intentional, it is not something thrust down the viewers throats because it is someone's agenda. What is so wonderful about the show is that it is about amateur bakers living in the UK who just happened to be from all these different backgrounds and cultures and becomes one big wonderful heart embracing love fest.

I think baking and equestrian events are the only ones that do not care about who you are but what your skill is.

Read a review of the 1st episode and can't wait until Netflix shows it. Apparently it is more of a flashback in attitude and personality to earlier shows and the British reviewer wrote that it is quite funny.

I saw part of it -- for once the intro is actually a funny skit, as opposed to cringe. I need to watch the rest of it still...

I was talking about the beginning of the episode without spoiling it -- they did their usual costumed skit, but this one was a little better than usual for me...

I'm just starting to watch it now and I agree, the opening skit was a very fun way to introduce Alison to the Bakeoff family. I can already tell she has a soothing personality, which will complement Noel's crazy.

Just finished watching. It was totally wonderful. I love all the bakers, and I love the addition of Alison to the show. I love Matt Lucas, but he and Noel were a bit much together.
Well done, show!!!!

Finished watching Season 14 Episode 1 - Cake Week - September 29, 2023 Luv'ed the skit. Knew from the music it would be a riff on The Godfather. It didn't go overboard just the right note. Oh my gosh, Alison is a breath of fresh air. Since Mel and Sue, the original hosts left, the show has had problems with getting the chemistry right between the hosts. Noel and Sandy, were OK. Noel and Matt were a bit of a disaster. Noel and Alison hit it right off. At times it seems Noel is really glad she is there. This show has amazing casting. They always get this awesome group of bakers with an amazing age range, ethnic background, and various lifestyles, all linked by their love of baking that is such a joy to watch and embrace. The technical challenge was fun with the question being do you include the missing raspberry?
The beaver question. Luv how Paul just turned around and everyone else just put their hands on their faces. Handled well.
Luv Dan the winner, but there were times I absolutely did not understand a single word he said. He talks fast and doesn't quite enunciate his words (mumbles) and I am lost. Overall a lovely episode.

I can already tell she has a soothing personality, which will complement Noel's crazy. I don't know if I would call Alison soothing. She has a strong presence but it is not negative or combative it actually is very lifting, very positive, but we can have some fun along the way.

I've been complaining about the missing raspberry ( to myself) in like forever! So happy the producers decided to highlight it.
Lovely addition, humor all the way, cast is fascinating.

Finished watching and I'm not sure what it says about Matt Lucas, but besides the bakers it was like a huge fresh breath of relief in the tent amongst the hosts and judges that was really noticeable. Noel in particular seemed thrilled to bits Alison was there. Even Paul seemed to have some pep, and he's been phoning it in the past two years. The bakers are lovely, as was the person who got sent home first; you could tell they just had a abysmal time doing the Showstopper.

Now they only stay for the weekend and everyone can go home for the week. That must take a lot of stress off the cast and crew.

No spoilers for Friday, but I'm really happy with the bakers and the show in general this year. Everyone's so endearing, and Noel and Alison work well off each other without the humor becoming forced or shticky. They even interact with the bakers better than when Matt was there -- and the bakers have good comebacks ready.
I agree Bearcata, a lot of it probably has to do with not being under quarantine any longer. I imagine it was harder to find bakers willing to give up that much time and not be able to go home that past few seasons. THe show seems to be totally back on track again.

Fired up the vpn to watch early and I laughed way too hard at the opening skit!
Not commenting on the episode until Friday (when most people will have the opportunity to watch on Netflix), except to say the vibe is so nice now on the show, it's unreal. Everyone is relaxed and basically having a good time.

Season 14 Episode 2 - Biscuit Week - October 06, 2023
I like the new host she really balances Noel.
Poor Keith you could sort of see that he was the one to go. His flavors were wonderful but the looks not so good. I think this is one of those times that the tent time line and the bakers time lines do not align.
Tasha Stones was Star Baker and it was well deserved. I do like as the GBBO's first deaf person they are handling the entire situation with grace and dignity. Notice how production is not constantly asking either the judges, hosts, or cast about Tasha being deaf or promoting it in show ads as they would in the USA. I like how seamless they make having a deaf person and an interpreter on the show.

I enjoyed this week immensely. Alision continues to be a gem and it's a joy to see her and Noel interact with each other. I laughed so hard when one of the baker's jam disappeared in their Signature Bake. Paul kept cutting open her teacakes and there was no jam to be found. I also laughed at Keith's "tomato" in his ham and tomato sandwich. It was really sad looking, especially in comparison with the guy who created that awesome Burger showstopper. I have always heard of custard cremes but had no idea of what they looked like. I wonder how they taste? And can you get them in the States? The contestants had four hours to create a meal or banquet scene made from biscuits for the Showstoppers, and a lot of the bakers rose to the occasion. Abbi made a dim sum banquet, while Saku went for a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast, and Tasha opted to recreate a chicken katsu. Other options included charcuterie boards and pies. That burger and fries showstopper from Josh was a thing of beauty (as was Abbi and Tasha's) and I laughed at Paul's delayed handshake to Josh because "I was so full of biscuits, I forgot" lol. The person who went home made similar mistakes as the guy who went home last week; I think it was just a really bad week in the tent, plus their Signature, Technical, AND Showstopper was kind of a mess. One of the things I love about this show is how they treat people with disabilities because that has no bearing on baking ability. I didn't even realize Tasha was deaf until this week when I saw her interpreter next to the judges during the Signature. If this was an American show it would be like "Hey, she's DEAF, ya'll, but she's plucky! She does so much, despite being deaf! Hey guys...did you know that she was DEAF?" Honestly, being deaf is one of the least remarkable things about that woman, so good on GBBO for keeping the focus on her bakes. I remember them doing the same for Briony as well as another contestant that had a artificial leg.

The only thing I didn't like about Alison in this episode was how she kept bugging Keith to drop what he was doing and demonstrate part of his stand-up comedy routine. He did a great comeback when a timer went off and she asked "What's that timer for?" He didn't miss a beat: "That's the timer that says this interview is over."

Season 14 Episode 3 - Bread Week - October 10, 2023
Wow, it seemed that the several bakers just imploded.
Like that they bring up foraging. Notice how many of the bakers try new flavors and many of them grow their own veg or forage in the woods for it.
Is is Dana, how the heck did her glass bowl break? Would she have to start from the beginning not knowing if some of her dough might have glass in it?
Luv'ed the tiger centerpiece.
Tasha is really standing out this week.

The new ep should be up shortly on Netflix, but without spoiling, let me say:
- This is still the most adorable, amiable cast they've ever had, top to bottom - It's Chocolate Week, and true to form, it's one of the hottest weekends of the year - In fact, someone doesn't finish due to heat exhaustion! - The parade of double entendres continues, this week focusing on nuts - Saku is freaking hilarious
Enjoy!

Without spoiling, is heat exhaustion whay happened to that person who dropped out? Because that's a shame. Also, LOL@ Alision keeping all the chocolate from Noel!
