Tournament of Champions:Yay Darnell x2 for knocking Tiffany out of the game. Hurrah for Maneet! Wow at a tie between Antonia and Jet Tila, that was amazing! They have to cook again next week to break the tie and then the Finals. I wanted Darnell to beat Tiffany, made me smile. Who is going to win the tiebreaker? I like them both.

Spring Baking ChampionshipAll three bakers knocked it out of the park in the finale last night. The cakes were absolutely beautiful and tasted good too, and I can see why they had such a hard time judging. Congratulations to Reya! I've liked her from the beginning; I always love it when a contestant puts their own spin on what they're making, and she stayed true to adjusting her traditional Indian deserts for each challenge. Anyone else think Duff's new show looks like Good Eats with Muppets?

I also was happy for Reya. As said all three had wonderful finishes. It was a talented group this time around.

Anyone else think Duff's new show looks like Good Eats with Muppets? Yes! This is just what my daughter and I said when we saw the commercial. While I agree that all three bakers did a great job with their final cakes, I liked Derek’s the best. I was surprised that he was listed last of the three on the spinning board. He had three different flavors/layers of cake and a huge area of decorations around the cake. The other two bakers had just one flavor of cake in each layer, and Natalie’s cake was judged as being dense.

Best Baker In America
Love the new format where instead of a pre and main heat they just have a Main Heat and the two lowest ranked bakers have a bakeoff instead of one of them just being voted off--it gives them a chance to redeem themselves. I liked the layered cakes they had to make for the Main Heat and was surprised more people didn't have trouble with it. The Bakeoff treat was Shoo-Fly Pie, which is straight Pennsylvania Dutch. I remember taking a trip by chartered bus to NYC in the mid 80s with a group that included my mom, her best friend, and her daughter, and when we were in Penn. decided to stop by this lumberjack restaurant named Zinn's. Everyone was dressed like Hee-haw and Paul Bunyan and the servings were ENORMOUS, one of the guys we were with ordered 3 pancakes and they were like a foot across and half an inch deep each. Anyway, they had Shoo-Fly pie there and I tried it. It's very sweet and very rich, and I would not mind having it again.

Hey! Did not know this had started since I don't get the Food Network commercials anymore. Thanks for posting. I looked it up and Karla is hosting. She has become ubiquitous. Jason is judging, but without Marciella. I'll go check out Discovery+ and see if they are running concurrent.

I don't mind Carla; I love her, and a lot of FN shows require a complete quarantine of the people involved for the duration of the show. Not everyone wants to do that, so I'm not going to fault her for doing it.

That was my thought after I posted. They are probably using Terranea again and Carla may have a permanent apartment. Also she doesn't have children and I don't think she currently has a business where she needs to be present. PLUS...She is a very good and competent host.

Halloween Baking Championship is now shooting, and the Christmas Cookie Challenge/Holiday Baking Championship/the rest of the Holiday shows are filming from late July/October. They didn't say who is hosting, judging, or where they are shooting HBC but I'd be happy with Stephanie again unless Lorraine comes back.

I’d like Lorraine to come back for the Holiday Baking show as I live for the passive aggressive interactions between her and Nancy. Lol. I don’t think she’ll be on the Halloween show if it is shooting now as she literally just got married.

Kal Penn from Harold and Kumar is hosting a new show called "Money Hungry" This August.
This sounds new, fresh, and a lot of fun. Will definitely check it out!

Money Hungry: I don't know about this one, you guys. It's got an interesting premise but there are 15 cloches of food that contestants have to guess, and if they miss any of them they win nothing. It's also an extremely slow-paced show to the point that I've tried to watch it twice now but haven't made it past the first contestant because I fell asleep both times. I like Kal Penn so I'm going to try and watch again next week.

Ok, watched the second episode that is available on Demand and this contestant literally got up to 14/15 cloches before he got one wrong. They really need to change this to a "win more money the more cloches you guess" instead of "guess all 15 to win" because you get really invested in these people and the way it is now there's literally no payoff; in 2 episodes 3 people went home and the last guy was a "to be continued" type of deal. At this rate no one is going to win that 50k.

I was up late last night and caught a new show on FN called "The Globe" where you have chefs that specialize in foods around the world compete against each other to reproduce foods from different locales. I think Eric from Money Hungry would be a much better judge on this show as he has multicultural cooking chops and is wasted over there. Last night, the areas were Oaxaca, Nakhon Si Thammarat, & NoLa. At the first stop, Oaxaca City, Mexico, the chefs are tasked with cooking with a traditional Oaxacan protein: chapulines, or grasshoppers. Next, they tackle the cuisine of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand. The final two chefs are transported to New Orleans, where they must make their best celebration dinner with Creole-inspired ingredients. I noticed that sweet sweet Kess from one of the baking shows is on this show (along with other familar faces). This show got 0 advertising but is really a great show so try to catch it on demand!

Money Hungry:Okay, now I'm watching to see if anyone actually wins the 50k. The "to be continued" man got up to the very last cloche....only to guess wrong. I'm sorry, but it is just not fun to watch people get that far and leave with absolutely nothing. I like Kal as host and the judges are fun but they need to fix this.

While I am fascinated how some people are able to identify the tiniest flavor/note in foods, I find the show boring. Maybe if there was more than one contestant competing it would prove more interesting. I agree watching them get so far and leave with nothing is not fun.

Did anyone watch the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream show the other night (sorry I can’t remember the name)? I only caught the tail end of it when the person sent home had to bury their flavor into a grave in a cemetery. I think I get what they were going for, but I feel like this is a premise better used in one of their Halloween themed shows.

I didn’t watch the show but if you ever go on Ben and Jerry’s website they have a section called the flavour graveyard where they have information on their discontinued products, with each product having its own headstone. You can even vote to “resurrect” a flavour there. So I’m guessing that’s why they used that setup in the show.

Money Hungry: Yes! Yes! Finally someone won the 50k and I was really happy for her. She was one of the more interesting contestants as she had many food stories surrounding the food in the cloche. I also noticed that she made a point of using her hands and sense of smell to determine what certain things were. It's really great to see someone winning because they literally eat and make food from all around the world because that last question (What Ethiopian allspice is generally used in their food) was a stumper. Breaking out the champagne for everyone when she won was a nice touch.

Halloween Baking Championship
Love this years theme of 80s slasher horror. Love the fact that John is back this year as host. I really liked the opening scenes of the bakers walking through the woods to get to the baking area. I don't know names yet, but based on the bakes this week there's a LOT of talent this year. Another new feature is making the first bake being about the taste of the bake while the second bake is more about doing a showstopper. The first bake was to use a breakfast cereal to create a "cereal killer pie" and since the fastest people got there first some contestants got stuck with things like Corn Flakes and rice krispy. The second bake was to create a big cake with a "murder on the lake" theme and I have to admit a lot of these were showstoppers; I especially liked the cake of the sea creature peeking out from the lake, and the bakers that used skeletons and bones in their designs. One thing I wished they continued from last year was getting the judges in costume early and having them roam about and interact with the bakers as they are baking; they went back to having the judges come out dressed and only interact with the bakers during judging. Last night was a lot of fun and I hope this trend continues.

I hate it whenever any show does an elimination in the very first challenge, it means someone gets one less chance to shine, and two people get eliminated right on the first episode. Other than that downer, it was a solid premiere for this new season of Halloween Baking Championship, and I enjoyed it.

I opened the new season of Halloween Wars in Discovery + and find that it has been dropped on its head and shaken in a blender.
NO more Jonathan Bennett. NO more pumpkin carvers.
Cake decorator/sugar artists only in a very spooky place. A man who owns a haunted museum in Las Vegas is the scene setter and Eddie is the on stage host/judge along with holdover Shinmin Li.
It is weird and strange and not familiar at all (except for Shinmin). For all that it was new and the decorators did more than adequate work.
They broke it down into two sections for the first challenge and one trio of cakers was sent home from each. Kind of like that clue baking show. The third episode they will merge and compete all together.
This could work. I was getting tired of the pumpkins.
