There have never been this many TV shows available, period. There certainly weren't this many 30 years ago because we had THREE channels! Fox wasn't really competition for the big three networks (ie. ABC, NBC, CBS), there was no CW/WB, and there weren't that many series on premium cable, much less on pay cable channels like AMC or TBS. There are more superhero shows than that...there is Legion, that new show on Freeform (Cloak and Dagger), Agents of Shield, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist...could be more, I don’t know. For sure. I count 14 superhero shows and I'm probably missing one or two. There have NEVER been that many cop shows on at one time. Even if you don't count the Netflix Marvel shows, it's way too many in the same genre and some of them are terrible.
There really aren't that many cop and medical shows on the air right now: SUV, Chicago PD, Shades of Blue and Blue Bloods for the police shows (maybe I missed one?) and Grey's Anatomy, Code Black (now cancelled), The Good Doctor and The Resident for medical shows. Maybe you could argue for Lethal Weapon as a cop show (although I don't consider it one) If you add in the NCIS/CSI franchises, that's a few more. So between 10 and 12, probably. Here's what I get for sci-fi/fantasy/superhero/post-apocalyptic shows (and there are many more if you really mine the various streaming platforms - I've just named a few of those): Flash Arrow Agents of Shield Black Lightning Legends of Tomorrow Krypton Supergirl Legion Cloak and Dagger Daredevil Defenders Luke Cage Jessica Jones Iron Fist The Punisher Shannara Chronicles Supernatural The Magicians The Orville Altered Carbon Colony 12 Monkeys Black Mirror Shadowhunters The Crossing The 100 Walking Dead Fear the Walking Dead Z Nation (cancelled?) Preacher Westworld Game of Thrones American Gods Van Helsing Stranger Things Continuum Lucifer The Outpost (about to premiere on the CW) The Originals Salvation Siren iZombie Wynonna Earp Star Trek: Discovery Into the Badlands The Gifted Counterpart The Expanse Gotham Killjoys
That's just off the top of my head and it's an insane number (50, for those keeping count!). There are more coming this year too.
I don't watch any show based on genre: tell me a good story and make me care about the characters and I'm in. Conversely, if the story is tired and the writing is bland, I won't watch. Some of the shows I listed are ones I watch faithfully. With others, I couldn't even make it through one episode.
While there have been MANY cop and medical dramas on TV, I'd argue that the more common genre at the moment is this sci fi/supernatural/fantasy genre. It seems like every other new show lately has some sort of sci fi gimmick. I guess that's what "the people" want; I just wish many of them were better quality than they are. Although I guess then we can discuss their cancellation in this thread when it happens! I don't think it is quite fair to include series on subscription networks like Netflix, HBO, or STARZ as not everyone gets them. When this discussion started I was mainly thinking the basic networks and cable like TBS, TNT, USA. I mean Altered Carbon is Netflix and Netflix gets scifi and fantasy series from all over the world. The majority of my life there have been nothing but cops shows, doctor show, lawyer shows, rich people shows, and nothing else. Well Star Trek was the exception to that for a number of years. Then the SyFy network established itself and made many horrible fantasy and sci fi films very few series. Smallville was a mainstay on the CW for years but it was there by itself but since Arrow premiered 7 years ago the CW has become a home for the superhero. Great for me. It's about time. But it's not as if every show is like that. There are so many different genres out there to enjoy and I can finally get my fill of fantasy, scifi, and superheroes.

ABC has given a full season order to The Rookie for those that are watching you can at least be sure it will be around for a while.

I was simply trying to say to Bearcata....Agents Of Shield is Marvel. Marvel is now Disney...ABC is Disney....synergy is not one of Disney's short coming.

Neither Murphy Brown nor Happy Together were given a full season order. Both shows will end after the initial 13 episodes. Not shocked on Happy Together, the cast has very little chemistry IMO. Murphy was always meant to be only the 13 episodes, sadly. I enjoyed having her back on my small screen, Corkey on the other hand.. shes more annoying than ever lol. And Joseph, I read a while back, season 6 will start shooting next month, but Netflix has not confirmed air date.

I enjoy the relationship between Murphy and her son. I also like the lighthearted comedy of Happy Together. While neither show has been given additional episodes, I’ll enjoy what has been produced.

All of these shows, unlike in the past, are given a 10 - 13 episode order to kick them off. If they are proven successful the order will be extended. If they are really successful they will be given a full season order & then renewed for another year. If Murphy Brown was deemed a hit, it would have been extended.

Well, that can be said of any show. The request for 13 was not by the network it was by the show. Turns out there MAY be another season, it hasn't been officially been renewed yet.. ???? lol, so we shall see. I can't see another season being longer.

I hope Murphy Brown gets renewed, I do love the relationship between Murphy and her son. For me, that's the best part of each episode. I am glad to see that the mother and son moments are about half of each episode.

Each episode is getting better and better! And now, they've got a new character that's the cutest thing EVER!!!! A little handicapped dog with 2 wheels. So cute!!!

CBS has decided to end Elementary after the upcoming 13 episodes of season 7. That's no shocker, and I'm fine with it, even though I've watched every season, and maybe seen every episode. They've moved it around a lot. I think this last move was a good one and maybe should have happened sooner. They should probably move more shows to the summer when their numbers start to wane, but are still decent.

Z Nation has been cancelled after five seasons. A spinoff called Black Summer is going to be airing on Netflix. Fans of Z Nation are hoping that Neflix will also bring back Z Nation.
