The leisure seeker. Donald Sutherland and Helen Mirren play an elderly married couple. Fantastic acting...humorous, while also dealing with a difficult subject. A few twists I didn't expect...and a subject that many of us ignore till it's too late. We both laughed and we both teared up. Where did you see this, Fanny? Is it On Demand, Netflix or cable? I had read the review when it first came out and had wanted to see it but never got around to it. I adore Helen Mirren but was wondering if it was a bit depressing due to the subject matter. From the library, I get most of our movies from there, but it didn't depress us. It's a slice of life..

Just realized that "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" is coming out on Netflix TOMORROW. It was a wonderful book, and the trailer looks every bit as amazing. And there are at least 4 Downton Abbey alumnae in it. Lily James has become one of my new favorite actresses. ETA: We just finished watching the movie. I loved absolutely every minute of it. Casting was superb, scenery was just like what we saw when we visited Guernsey (although I read that it wasn't filmed there). Didn't think the movie could possible live up to my expectations and hopes, but it did . . . and far exceeded. I watched is yesterday and am still swooning over Michiel Huisman! I mean, he's super sexy on GOT, but there's something about those 1940's wool trousers Definitely going to watch it again. I pretty much ALWAYS think the book is better, but this time I think I liked the movie more. I liked (but didn't love) the book, but it was a gorgeous film. Great writing, terrific cast too

I've never watched GoT, so had not seen Mr. Huisman before. When he first walked in the door, I looked at Mr. AZC and said, "Well, he's hot!" LOL.

I watched Like Father on Netflix over the weekend. I'd heard such accolades for it that I was expecting something special. I didn't think it lived up to those expectations. It kept my attention enough to watch it the entire way through. But it felt more like the kind of movie of the week that networks used to do so we all saw our favorite TV stars in different roles as opposed to a special and unique movie.

Chappaquiddick.
Sad comment on morality of Ted Kennedy. ( The selfish coward) Tragic for the parents of the victim. Shows corruption of Washington elite, willing to cover up anything to keep power. The Kennedy machine in motion, was something else..
A very interesting character was Joe Gargan, a close friend and cousin of Kennedy, who apparently discouraged Ted from claiming Mary Jo was driving by herself and later "discovered" in the pond. Unfortunately, Gargan didn't notify the police of the accident that night, claiming he assumed Kennedy was going to.

His character on GOT has probably never read a book, unless it was about war....or maybe sex! I will say that those wool trousers from Guernsey are covering up a world-class bum

I tried watching Nine Lives (2016). I had to turn it off. The cat screams were so realistic they were upsetting my cats. And besides it was kind of stupid.

I went to Eighth Grade last night. The previews for it had intrigued me so I wanted to see it before it left the theater.
While it wasn't the best movie I've ever seen, it did make me think long after it ended and gave me new perspective.
The movie is about a girl finishing her middle school years and about to enter high school. She has the usual angst of trying to make friends, being interested in a boy, figuring out how to make herself known in the world, and breaking away from her parents (in this case, just her dad) to become a grown-up.
The movie is painfully awkward about halfway through. She appears to be so absorbed in her own drama that she won't communicate with her dad, although he's obviously very interested in trying to communicate with her. She comes across as selfish, shallow, and bland. However, once you get to see inside her, you find out that she has severe social anxiety and you sympathize with her.
I was very shy in school, too. I didn't talk to or look at anybody, I avoided being in groups of people, preferring to sit alone looking in, and I had a crush on a guy but was too shy to approach him. The girl in this movie pushes past her fears and even though it makes her uncomfortable, she talks to a popular girl in school who obviously doesn't want to talk to her, she attempts to have conversations with the boy she likes, she stops looking in at a party and joins the group to participate in their activities.
The thing that affected me the most is she says she used to think people were born either popular or unpopular but then she realized everyone gets the choice to decide if they're going to be popular or not. They just have to have the confidence to put themselves out there and be brave enough to decide that they are popular.
I wish I had seen this movie when I was in middle school because it might have made a big difference in me. I could have used this advice when I was at my most awkward.

It is for this reason that I want my kid to watch it with me. She is only going into the 7th but by the time it gets on demand or Netflix she will be going into 8th, so perfect timing!

Saw The Spy who Dumped Me. Kate McKinnon is, of course, fabulous as always. Mila Kunis was not very exciting to say the least. In fairness, were it not for Kate, I would not have seen it. She, however, dominates every scene she's in and while the film is still not going to win any awards, it was elevated due to Kate's presence.

I went to Alpha last night. It wasn't the best of that type of movie I've seen before (human separated from other humans and raised by/surviving with animals) but it wasn't the worst. The best thing about it was the cinematography. The resolution was so clear, you could see every flake of snow, the pores on the people's faces, etc. There were stunning landscapes and night scenes, fantastic special effects, a real feast for the eyes!
The movie was kind of so-so about three-quarters through but there were surprises at the end which elevated my impression of it. If you love wolves or nature, you'll definitely want to see it!
I had a good time talking to the lady next to me in the theater. I struck up a conversation with her when I got to my seat. I asked if this was her first time being at this theater since it's only been open a short time and she said this was the third movie she'd seen there. It was also my third movie there. She was there for the $5 ticket special on Tuesday, the same as me! When the movie was over, I said maybe I'd see her again some other Tuesday and she gave me a package of gummy treats. I thought that was so nice of her! I'll have to start bringing an extra goody in my purse so if I do see her again sometime, I can return the favor.

Hereditary, with Toni Collette and Gabriel Byrne. A slow-burn horror story that would have been really disturbing even without the supernatural stuff. Toni Collette was fantastic, IMO.

I'm seeing The Happytime Murders tonight. I don't like Melissa McCarthy but the previews were funny so I wanted to see it.
I'm ashamed to admit I've become a theater raccoon. After finding a nearly full tub of popcorn sitting on top of the trash area at an AMC theater, I started checking the bins for them. I could buy a small popcorn for $5 and then add it to a tub of slightly used popcorn and give myself a free size upgrade!
I started to check the trash here but stopped myself because I just began the Atkins diet yesterday and I'm cutting way back on carbs.

Upgrade - If you're into action flicks with a side of futuristic at all then I cannot recommend this indie film enough. FANTASTIC. Original. Loved it. This was made available to rent on our ON DEMAND last night and one of the best action flicks I have seen. The twist at the end I did't pick up on and I thought it was going a predictable way but then it went another way and I thought it was really well done. Pretty short movie which keeps it moving quickly. It is violent but some of those scenes my mouth fell open at how it was done. Crazy. My hubby never likes anything and he loved this.

Ooo, Upgrade sounds good. I'll have to check that out...
I watched Skyscraper (Dwayne Johnson again, with Neve Campbell) last night - a typical over the top action movie. It was okay, but won't win any awards for originality.

To follow up on the Happytime Murders, I would say it and Roger Rabbit both blurred the line between children's comedy and adult comedy. Roger Rabbit was definitely more kid-friendly, Happytime was more adult-oriented. Happytime is not a movie you should take young children too, unless you want to jumpstart your discussion on the the birds and the bees. There's a lot of cussing and references to drugs in it, too.

Is Upgrade currently in theaters or did you watch it on dvd? I'm not finding it in any of my theaters, not even in coming attractions. I see it is an indie film so maybe it's not showing in my area. It sounds VERY interesting!

It sounds VERY interesting! We rented it thru our cable service Comcast ON DEMAND. It's available thru REDBOX too if you do that. It was in theaters but was a smaller budget type of film so didn't get the big push in marketing like a lot of the bigger films.

We just watched "Like Father" on Netflix. Most of it was set on a cruise ship, and they rode one of our favorite ziplines (in Labadee, Haiti). So guess whether I liked it.
YES!!!

I was reticent to watch this one because I'm not a Kelsey Grammer fan, but I thought he did a nice job. My love of Kristen Bell pulled me in. I thought it was really sweet and didn't fall into the cliches that I was waiting for, or at least the major one I expected that didn't happen.
I thought sure {Spoiler} Harry was going to have a heart attack and/or die, which is an overused plot device to bring estranged characters together.
I thought Kristen Bell stole the movie. She was excellent. So were the group of supporting players. Seth Rogen did a nice job too - his wife directed the movie, so he slept with the director for the role I'll bet they all had a great time on that shoot.

I saw "Like Father" on Netflix as well. I had no big expectations and wasn't disappointed. I don't believe I have ever seen a film with Kelsey Grammer in it. I was always ambivalent about him on Frasier and didn't really think he deserved all the Emmys he won for his role. Plus, I can't seem to separate the man and his personal life from his acting. I do like Kristen Bell a lot...love the commercials she and husband Dax do together. Anyway, cute movie.
I watched "The Sense of an Ending" the other night with Jim Broadbent, Charlotte Rampling and Michelle Dockery. Loved it!

Saw “The Darkest Minds” over the weekend. It was a good screen adaptation of the novel. I enjoyed the YA book series, so I was interested in seeing the story unfold on screen. I wanted more, but I guess they were planning for a series of movies. You really had to have read the books to fully understand what was happening. I’d love to see the series continue, but think there’s YA dystopian movie fatigue unfortunately. Glad I got see this portion of the story in this format.

Watched the latest Mission Impossible today and loved it. It was great to see some returning faces, and Henry Cavill made a great villain.

My daughter is 10 and wants to see it but I wasn't sure if some themes were too mature.
