I do wish HGTV would put some of the "G" back in the name. There's not a single garden/landscaping-only show currently on.
Christina on the Coast last night - yikes. I hated everything about that bathroom except the round tub. The homeowners loved it but I thought it looked hideous. And they spent all that money for a ridiculous bump-out on the house to have a huge, goofy triangle shaped closet.

Home Town Takeover - Behind the Build - June 13, 2021
I don't normally like the "Behind the Build" episodes as maybe 30 seconds of new stuff is added and you are basically watching a repeat. I like this episode because it was more of a commentary of the homes picked, why they picked them, and the reason behind the design decisions. It was enjoyable and a chance to see all the kitchens again.
Ben and Erin did a very nice job providing the commentary. They are much more relaxed on camera and it was nice to hear their thought process.
There were also clips of the home owners and them commenting on their homes and how they function so much better now and how they love the renovations.

Home Town Takeover - Take of the Town - June 13, 2021
Ben and Erin discuss their 6 tips of a small town makeover and showcase how those tips applied to the businesses they renovated in Wetumpka.
The 6 tips to a Small Town Makeover
1. Find your assets. For example Wetumpka had the Coosa River.
2. Places to gather. Wetumpka has the Civic Center and Coaches Corner.
3. Embrace your history. Wetempka, has the river, the crater, and dinosaurs.
4. Small changes, big impact. Painting the doors of homes on Bridge Street or stringing lights on Company Street.
5. Pride of Place. Murals.
6. Add color. Painting the buildings on Company Street and the popup store.
Both episodes were fun and had enough fresh material that they are well worth watching.

Our city planners must have watched Home Town Takeover, all of a sudden they've got some colorful murals going on and a bunch of projects planned for downtown. About time. Christina on the Coast - amazing how that running shower caused SO much water damage. The house went from 90's Tuscan to - you guessed it - white, gray and black. Snore.

Hurrah! I wonder what the show is going to be like since the Mom doesn't want to do it anymore?
The Boise Boys new show is also supposed to be released late summer/fall.

Loving $50K Three Ways. After the initial episode of HGTV's Design Star I continued to watch the series but none of the other season winners ever shone like David Bronstad. I have seen Tiffany Brooks hosting the multitude of Dream House giveaways but was not that impressed with her design skills. However $50K Three Ways has changed my mind and I would luv to have Tiffany Brooks design my house.

The article I read a while back said that she was retiring from the company and wasn't doing the show anymore. I'm very glad to be wrong!
And yes, 50k 3 Ways is a really cute show, she's a great host and her designs for her clients are colorful and fun. I can see why she was teamed with David for the Block shows.

I am liking the renovation shows that are more about upgrading the finishes and not about taking down every wall. Two Steps was better than I thought it would be. I do like the aspect of the team updating the home that is being sold and then renovating the newly bought home and not for ridiculous amount of money $100,000 and higher.

Christina on the Coast is this weird traffic accident you are just mesmerized by. I cringe at her tile choices, however at times the finished product does not look that bad. I cringe that I am even saying that.
However spending $80,000 on a bathroom remodel is outlandish and the husband is a firefighter, what kind of salary does this man make? Don't get me started on having a hardwood floor in a bathroom. This was the husband's choice not Christina's. The other pet peeve is penny round tile. Don't get me wrong penny tile can look good if is is laid out correctly and I saw major problems on the floor of that wet room. For $80,000 the tile must be perfectly laid out.

I like them. I caught part of a marathon one Saturday and was hooked; I love how they instantly can pinpoint a house's problem spots and come up with workable solutions. I'm also glad they work in color as opposed to the "drown everything in beige and neutrals so it will appeal to more people" crowd.

Unsellable Houses is a fun show and just finished it's 13 episode season 2. I like that they are based on the West Coast, and that they are using a style esthetic to sell homes in that area. That style esthetic is a mix of mid century modern, coastal, with lots of textures, natural elements, and color.
I luv how these ladies prep a house for sale. Indeed the market on the West Coast is insane. I do like the opportunity to see some older, more modern style homes built in the 60's. I do like their bathrooms and kitchens. There are some tile choices I didn't like but they are not afraid of going for the darker, more woodsy feel in the finishes.

Liking Frozen in Time a bit more, it depends on the house and the renovation. Loved the tile backsplash on the 1988's house, and the hombre effect on the walls in the master bedroom. I want that. I absolutely luv that during the final home tour, Ben the other host, tells you what they spent in that particular area of the home. You get a really good sense of what it costs to do some of the remodels, especially if there is any structural work to be done.

Anyone remember that house the Boise Boys renovated in Season 2 that Luke liked so much he bought Clint out of his share and made it his family house? Well, Luke's family is big, and as the children are getting older their needs have changed and they need more space. They bought a huge plot of land nearby but need more cash to build a new place so they are selling the house. Luke advertised an Open House on his Instagram for this weekend and it would not surprise me if they got a good offer right away because it's a beautiful house.

Good Bones: Loved seeing Mina and Karen again doing new things in the old hood. I am really, really glad that they kept the gingerbread detailing and woodwork that was original to the exterior of the building. Kinda sad they did not extend that care to the inside of the house; while Mina excels at doing gut jobs they haven't been as good at preserving the inside of their buildings unfortunately; there were a few beautiful transom doors in that house and they did not save any of them. I understand that the reason why on the first floor was to enlarge the kitchen and living room but I was still sad. I'm not overly superstitious but at the same time I don't "not" believe either and I was glad that they put the bound shoe back where it was. The kitchen was a delight and I'm glad that Mina's brother pushed for the vaulted ceiling in that room. Overall, it was a lovely house and I look forward to the rest of the season.
edit: I googled and found some interesting information about Concealed Shoes. They seem to serve the same purpose as bottle trees do in the South except it's a European tradition that found its way to the States.
Also, Curbed has a good article about a lot of these home traditions, including shoes, "hex" signs, bottle trees, "haint" blue porches, and witch windows:

Good Bones: Season 6, Episode 1 - Scary to Chic in Old Southside - June 29, 2021
Karen looked so relaxed and happy, retirement must be agreeing with her.
Luv'ed her building a corbel shelf with Austin. Austin has such a great voice. Luv'ed her post scene comments about letting her hair go silver, having time for all of her projects, enjoying life, being so happy, and saying "Retirement is the best".
I have always luv'ed the scope of work these ladies do and just do not understand how they stay in business when they get such a small return in profits on the sale of their homes. I do get the impression that Mina and her husband do renovate some homes and keep them for the rental market.
I do appreciate that they absolutely do try to retain the look and feel of the original house while updating the interior to a more modern lifestyle. I liked the more neutral pallet on this house and thought the backsplash and darker countertop looked fantastic in the white kitchen. Mina's marble tile choices for the bathrooms always give the rooms a classic updated look. I do wish they had shown the upstairs bedrooms.
I do like Karen's nod to planting size appropriate plants on your property to enhance the look and feel of the property, and not to potentially damage the house, the foundation, or the sidewalk.
With Karen's retirement from the business side of Two Chicks I do like that the producers are showing there is a team behind the two ladies and we are seeing more of them.
I really do like that the Two Chicks team also does connect with the old neighbors, and previous owners, and it was so nice to see the former owners godson Denny and to see the family photos and hear some of the stories. I did like that the team renovated the old TV and used it as part of their staging.
The only negative in the episode is that I really didn't need to see any "poo" water, that scene went a bit long.

You really couldn't say that about this house. The best architectural features were on the outside, the fishscales, the scroll work on the porch and those were refurbished or replicated and saved.

I love transom doors too! In my mind they were saved and set aside for another time because I can't bear the thought of them being tossed in the trash. And I wouldn't have touched that old shoe. I'm not terribly superstitious, but...yeah. They put so much work into these houses, I just wish they'd get more profit from them.

For all the spooky stuff they find in houses I would have a couple of priests and alternative folks available to bless their homes, just in case.

Yeah, I'd have a stockpile of sage to burn in some of these places. I'm sure they make a bit from HGTV and their other merchandise. Maybe they hold some of the houses over a year so they don't get nailed with short-term capital gains taxes, too. Or have a few rentals. I just hate seeing them "make" $20K for a thoughtful renovation when the Flip or Flop crew in California pulls in five times that for the same old crap. Location, I guess.

Hands down, for what they do they put their heart in it and it shows. Flip or Flop folks are only in it for profit, and that shows as well. I know what property I'd rather live in, and at least with the ladies you wouldn't have to have Mike Holmes coming out to your house in a few years to tell you how many ways your house is [redacted] because the flippers half-did everything.
While they aren't minting it, HGTV pays well for their talent that has a tested audience and since we are in the 5th (I think) season of a relatively popular show my guess is they are doing alright. They were able to afford to hire a bigger crew, plus in some of the older episodes where the house didn't sell right away they mentioned renting those properties out; I believe the sister that does not appear on the show lives in one of those units.
Hmmm...now I'm curious about who is making the money on HGTV. The last time I checked it was Fixer Upper/Property Brothers were really pulling it in for just the show; I want to see who is doing it now.

Good Bones: These ladies truly have a gift for turning straw into gold because they toured a house that was extremely fire damaged, yet found potential for something nice. A lot of just weird things happened during this renovation (half of the cabinets delivered were damaged, Tad getting the wrong color for the siding, something else I can't recall) but they managed to pull it off in the end. The light gray siding combined with the dark trimmings made a beautiful contrast, and I absolutely loved the steel porch railings with the wood trim. Since the buyer of the house was male they decorated in a way that had a very masculine feel, but not overbearing; lots of natural wood elements, steel, and leather. The herring pattern floor was great, and the kitchen was so compact and cute! Bathroom was great too; everything from the black finishings to the modern shower looked great against the marbles and gray tones was perfect.
What sucked is the ladies only made $1000 profit but it was in a new area for them and it was a family friend who saw the potential early on and locked in a good price. Another point is there was a lot of structure damage that had to be repaired, which made them go over their original reno budget by 25k.

Christina on the Coast - I like white uppers and dark blue lowers in the kitchen (and am thinking about doing that in my house) but that backsplash tile was annoying. Too patterned, too much, I don't know. I just didn't like it. The little seating area right when you walk in the front door was odd to me, it looked like something I'd have on the patio outside. *shrug*
That other house had such a pretty view of the ocean! What a way to wake up every day...
