I know, I just don't know how they stay in business unless the money they get paid from each episode does help and plus all the appearance fees for doing other events. For all the spooky stuff they find in houses I would have a couple of priests and alternative folks available to bless their homes, just in case. Yeah, I'd have a stockpile of sage to burn in some of these places. I'm sure they make a bit from HGTV and their other merchandise. Maybe they hold some of the houses over a year so they don't get nailed with short-term capital gains taxes, too. Or have a few rentals. I just hate seeing them "make" $20K for a thoughtful renovation when the Flip or Flop crew in California pulls in five times that for the same old crap. Location, I guess. I would think that labor is factored in the cost of the total renovation. When you get a bid for a renovation that is all inclusive. The only time a person pays more is if they run into extra problems that add to the renovation cost. I also think Good Bones has other things going that isn't HGTV related that helps them make a living. I am sure they reno other homes.

Luke from Boise Boys had a very successful Open House! He said over 500 people came to see it, and a lot of people made offers on the house. He said he's having one more open house this weekend, and then they're going to go over the offers. It's a beautiful house that is probably going to get top dollar.

Ant and Christina from Flip or Flop are dueling it out on Instagram doing the whole "introducing my new BF/GF" thing. First, Ant announces that he's dating Renee Zellweger(!), complete with pictures of them looking all shacked up and cosy. Not even half a day later Christina posts a pic of her and her new beau with his face obscured saying that she is a new woman since she went to S.A. and smoked some toads and has been in a relationship with this guy for a few months but wanted to keep it ~private~. Both of them are obvious and messy.

Both of them are obvious and messy. Ant was with his first wife 21 years (9 years dating, 12 years married) and Christina was married to Tarek for 7 years. They started dating in October 2017 right after both announced their marriages are over. December 22, 2018 Ant and Christina get married, nine months later (September 2019) their son, Hudson is born. On September 18, 2020 Christina announces the marriage is over. Now 10 months later they are posting pics on Instagram about who they are dating. Does anyone really care? It comes across as a "see what you let go" revenge type post. Really is anyone surprised? They both went into a rebound relationship right after a divorce and 3 years later it is over. Both should have waited at least 6 months after the first divorce, grieve the marriage, and take the time to figure out what they want to do and where they want to go before getting married or dating. Tarek at least waited 3 years after the divorce to get engaged to a Christina clone. He is at least showing some common sense.

I agree. I'm not a fan of Tarek's but he really seemed to take the time to go over what went wrong in his marriage and what he wanted in a relationship before dating again, and I wish him and his fiancee all the best.
If she was "really getting into having private moments" as she says Christina would have never posted about the new guy in the first place. Instead, it really came off as wanting to one-up her ex, and considering how she was the one to break up with him it's really not a good look.

Never in my life would I have guessed Christina would be the toad-smoking type - she always seemed pretty straight laced and wound a bit tight, IMO. I wish her best friend would sit her down and tell her to rein in her mess.

Battle on the Beach - caught the premiere last night, not bad. The kitchens all looked nice BUT the old paneling that Ty convinced the one team to keep and paint looked...not good. There's rustic, and there's ratty. This looked ratty, especially next to brand new cabinets and fancy countertops.
Love Mina and Mike, but Ty needs to stop yelling and Alison's attitude still wears on my nerves.

Battle on the Beach - premiered Sunday, July 11 2021
with a 2 hour episode with the couples doing the kitchen. Battle on the Beach is not a new concept. Several years ago HGTV did the same thing for about 2 seasons. You have 3 identical homes and 3 couples with HGTV mentors who have some design and flipping experience. This is a 6 episode season with the winning couple winning $50,000 and while not stated this is a potential audition for a future show.
Cast: 1. Kerry and David Kersh
Least annoying couple.
2. Josh and Shonnie Thomas
Most annoying couple. His must win at all costs annoys so much. Just shut the mouth and do the work. If you do the work well and have a good design you will win. This is the guy who will become big and then start to cut corners and we will have another building collapse.
3. Darryl and Sunjay Williams
These folks won the kitchen competition.
Why are all these folks real estate agents and house flippers?

Unfortunately, there are a lot of folks who half-ass it and don't need to be in this kind of work; particularly in Chicago; if I were buying a house here I would just get it "as is" and then get my own team to renovate as opposed to a flip or new build. Sadly, that crap Donovan was pulling during the second season of WCM is not unheard of here; they were just more famous than most of the outfits who get caught out.
Real Estate agents have different levels, with the top ones being extremely lucrative. Kelly Benesimon is now with a top real estate company in NYC and is doing quite well for herself now.
That's why she went and smoked them, lol. She said that years of anxiety and stress went away.

I am enjoying Alison she is trying SO HARD to rein in her competitive streak and not come down hard on her team. I do appreciate Mina's comments about the using 3 or 4 different wood tones instead of one and how that throws off the design. All three kitchens had an issue or two and if they are attempting to sell them eventually for close to 1 million they better be perfect. I totally agree about keeping the original paneling it looks HORRIBLE even painted. I think the designer on Vacation House Rules does a good job of painting over paneling and making it look good, but she had a decent foundation to work with unlike the folks on Battle on the Beach.

I am missing some context here, by "toad-smoking" are you referring to Christina getting high on marijuana? I do think Christina is way too high maintenance and a control freak. In regards to house flipping, I went to a staging seminar about 2 years ago, most of the folks there were interested in learning to stage their homes for sale, however one of the ladies was a house flipper. Most house flippers on HGTV tend to have over the top personalities and some brag about what they do, the lady at the seminar was very quiet and was there to learn staging but did comment that house flipping is very hard and not as easy as it looks on TV.

No. There's a certain toad in the SW that has venom in it that is a natural psychedelic that is extremely popular among shaman types and New Agers. People used to lick them but I guess now they have a way of extracting the venom from the toad, turning it into dust, and then smoking or snorting it. There have been some studies that have shown that it can be a help to people suffering from anxiety and depression, which is why some people do it. As it is, there are loads of "self enlightening" tours you could go on in Mexico and South America where you go out to the jungle and camp out in a small group with a Shaman, who administers the drug and makes sure everyone's trip goes okay while they are out there tripping balls.
I also have to point out that people involved with the ecology in that area are upset because they said that people constantly messing with these toads are lowering their numbers, and they are very connected with several species of things that grow there.

You will never lose a bet on the stupidity of human beings. Or lose a bet on how destructive humans are to other living beings and the environment because of greed and or self enlightenment. So Christina had to smoke toad venom to relax??? I guess getting a prescription for Valium was too common for her.

Good Bones - they finally got to finish the last condo in that four-plex with the copper roof. Really small but it was cute - it made sense to lose the dining room, but I still hated that they had to leave the only bathroom right off the kitchen. Bleah.
Nice, soothing colors and I loved the floor tile, but I don't know how "Art Deco" it was. *shrug* And Tad gouging up that hardwood floor with his buffoonery would have had me yelling at someone. Hopefully when they sell it in the future they make a good profit.

Good Bones Season 6, Episode 3 - Tiny Condo, Big Reno - July 13, 2021 Fun review from the local paper with lots of good photos of the condo. Both reviewers commented that they didn't see the Art Deco design and I didn't either. Overall the team does pack in a huge amount of architectural details like molding into any of their builds. I did like the chandeliers very much. I personally would have left the dining room and used it as an office. At least the murphy bed is a built in feature but does it really make that room a legitimate 2nd bedroom? There was no closet and now a days you need a closet to designate a room a bedroom. Do open shelves really count as a closet? As far as the placement of the bathroom, that is where the plumbing is in a multiunit building. It stays. I do think renters in an older building have to be a bit more easy going to the placement of the utilities and it is only 800 sq ft. www.indianapolismonthly.com/lifestyle/home/good-bones-recap-episode-3-2

Good Bones: These ladies truly have a gift for turning straw into gold because they toured a house that was extremely fire damaged, yet found potential for something nice. A lot of just weird things happened during this renovation (half of the cabinets delivered were damaged, Tad getting the wrong color for the siding, something else I can't recall) but they managed to pull it off in the end. The light gray siding combined with the dark trimmings made a beautiful contrast, and I absolutely loved the steel porch railings with the wood trim. Since the buyer of the house was male they decorated in a way that had a very masculine feel, but not overbearing; lots of natural wood elements, steel, and leather. The herring pattern floor was great, and the kitchen was so compact and cute! Bathroom was great too; everything from the black finishings to the modern shower looked great against the marbles and gray tones was perfect. What sucked is the ladies only made $1000 profit but it was in a new area for them and it was a family friend who saw the potential early on and locked in a good price. Another point is there was a lot of structure damage that had to be repaired, which made them go over their original reno budget by 25k. Good Bones Season 6 Episode 2 - A Charred Charmer For Cory - July 6, 2021 Cory is friends from school with Mina but has worked as a project manager for 2 Chicks and a Hammer for several years. Mina and Karen look like they are very big on having people they know work with them. It is truly a family company. It was informative that Cory stated he has wanted to buy a house for himself for sometime and has said so to Mina I don't think she takes it seriously (as she stated) and she is in the business of selling houses and takes offers as they come and does not wait for friends to get their financing together. It was obvious that Cory had his finances in order as he locked in very early which ended up being very fortunate for him. Even if he paid $30,000 more for the home he would have gotten a really good deal with where the current mortgage rates are at. Cory would be paying around $500 a month for his mortgage; that is a fantastic price. It is pretty obvious the house was designed for him in mind and I do not mind the darker colors. Overall the house looked great. The building the ladies do comes at a risk, especially when they move to new unimproved areas. Having a guaranteed buyer takes a huge financial load of their shoulders. On the other hand the market has been crazy due to the pandemic and the prices rose unexpectedly in that area and they had additional cost overruns due to having even more structural damage to the foundation. If not for that the ladies would have made a slightly larger profit, but they did go into the area and the build knowing that the house would be a lose leader. I am certain that they do have an accountant on call who helps them out with their overall finances.

Christina on the Coast - I'm kind of getting annoyed with this show, maybe if was only 30 minutes it wouldn't be so bad. Last night's project house was so boring and bland at first - white and beige, no real style or color - and it ended up being kind of farmhouse-y with the usual white/black/grays. I keep hoping for some color somewhere but...nah. Same old stuff. The only color was from the staging plants.

Very impressed with Christina this episode offering both light grey and darker grey options for cabinet color. There was even a hint of blue in one of the patterned tile options. Wow, the lady certainly likes to go bold with the color choices and using destressed subway tile in an innovative herringbone pattern as a backsplash option. I would luv to see Christina go head to head with Alison of Windy City fame over a kitchen redo. Alison would be shaking her boots with fear of losing that kitchen competition.

But let's face it they are all versions of the simplified, black and white with a bit of grey thrown in with pale wood floors farmhouse look. What makes me laugh out loud is when all of the clients say they don't want a cookie cutter kitchen that looks like everyone's kitchen (have these folks even watched this series?) and then Christina suggests doing a herringbone pattern with subway tile as if it is this new bold design choice. This is a show I watch to disparage and this show never fails to fulfill that need.

Battle on the Beach - Episode 2 - The Living Room - July 18, 2021
The second episode and the teams are doing the living room the foyer area and the top landing on the second floor.
I continue to have no interest in Team Ty, as Josh and Shonnie do not impress with their design choices. I extremely dislike the paneling in the house and even with the couple deciding to keep it in the living area and simply paint it screams cheap crappy paneling and no way am I paying for that garbage. The argument Josh has with Shonnie makes me actively dislike him and hope this team keeps losing, and losing, and losing. I was very upset with their totally destroying a very nice looking armoire. Seeing them sand the finish and add a black stain unevenly all over was sickening. On top of that their leaving a old stair railing unreinforced and about to fall over speaks to them not caring about their work and certainly not setting priorities. While I don't mind Ty's handmade straw light fixture the fabric sheeting with paint splatters bothers me. If this piece of fabric was framed or put on stretchers like a canvas it would have worked, otherwise it looks unfinished.
I feel that Team Taniyah and Team Alison are the teams to beat. I really did think Team Alison had it, with the look and feel. While I am not a fan of the distressed railing look (I hate the distressed look), the Ombre wall hanging and the light fixture were both wins. The rope hanging and the wagon wheel light were a good size and filled the volume of space in the living room and played nicely off each other. Darryl and Sunjay work well together and have that hands on experience which really helps their team. Still I don't know if I would buy any house any of the teams have physically worked on. I do wonder why Darryl and Sunjay bought a cabinet with a built in electric fire which is against a wall and it is not a focal point. The view of the beach is the focal point in that living room. Team Taniyah, Dave and Kerry, work well together and their years of working together really helps this team. I think the fireplace and changing the direction of the stairs plus styling is what won them this episode. I do think Mike Holmes was overly critical regarding the wire cable railing on the stair railings.
Overall I am enjoying the show, it is unfortunate that there are only two viable teams in the competition but it is what it is.

Battle of the Beach - knowing Mike Holmes is doing a walkthrough in your room and leaving unsafe, loose handrailings? Brilliant.
I don't like anything Ty's team is doing. The paneling wouldn't be so hideous if it wasn't all patched and it actually lined up - but it doesn't and it looks awful, painted or not. A dropcloth with paint splattered on it for art? Nope. Plus they staged it so the only seating was facing AWAY from the nice ocean view. They ruined that armoire and I don't care for heavy black curtains in a beach house. Come on.
Alison's team did better, the rope art and light fixture were nice. I loved what Taniya's team did, though - moving those stairs made such a difference. I liked the cable on the railings that Mike was complaining about, but I don't know building codes down there.

Hope that is fixed at the end of the show. I totally agree with you about Ty's team. That paneling is hideous and in no way comes across cottagey or charming. I have watched Vacation House Rules (on Sat) where they renovate cottages and many of them have rustic wood panels and the more finished panels. Many of them are painted over and look marvelous in their new colors and some are left to accent areas, but done deliberately as a smart design choice. However in these beach cottages, the paneling is horrendous. It looks like very bad fake 1970's paneling and not properly installed. Nothing lines up, there are cut up pieces all over place as if the person installing the paneling did not know what they were doing. I absolutely hate the paneling and I do think it totally devalues the property. I cringed when I saw what they did to that armoire, they destroyed it and what did it add to the design? I did not notice that the curtains were black. I did note that the curtains seem to pull down the walls and that the living room seemed unfinished. As for the drop cloth, it either needed to be stretched like an artist's canvas, mounted, or framed. The fabric needed to be stretched as if it was a canvas otherwise it looks like an after thought. It is the details this team is missing. At this point in the competition I don't care if I see them at all going forward as they offer no entertainment value except as an example of what not to do.

HGTV doesn't have any pics up, but this was on Ty's Instagram. Yuck. The more I look at that janky paneling, the more I hate it. Black curtains gotta go. And the "art" looks like an abstract rabid squirrel or something.

Okay, you guys posting about this show made me curious, so I watched this week's episode and you guys were right on the money. Initial Impressions: If I were on this show I would insist on having Alison as my mentor, lol. Big, Roomy beach houses, nice couples. So far, so good. Team Alison: I like this couple. They are incredibly chill and work together as a team. Alison works very well with them too; I've noticed that she's a lot less abrasive and more into getting the opinions of the other people on her team than on her show. Using the vintage wagon wheel as part of a chandelier was a great idea. Alison stated her reasoning for having the lights at the top of the wheel, then asked why they wanted the lights on the bottom. When the husband explained that he got the style of lights that were on a string and looked better hanging down she was like "You know what, that's a good idea" and they went with it. That macrame/string project looked really nice once they finished with it, and they had their couch facing the windows with the lovely view, and their stair railings were stable. Overall, very nice. Team Ty: This team is messy. She's obsessed with winning, which DUH, everyone wants to win, they just don't bring it up every 30 seconds. He is too busy browbeating his wife, then being frustrated that "now he has to do everything" because his wife got tired of him criticizing everything she did and went off to do other things. They committed furniture crimes by buying that beautiful armoire and painting it black (I do have to admit that their first attempt at painting it where the paint didn't set properly and it looked like the armoire had a deeper patina was kinda nice but nooo...they had to paint it again in a flat black. The walls...were very rustic, and I'm being kind here. The one thing I really liked was the rope banister, but I have a dog and he would be on those stairs all day every day just chewing. . I also liked the big rope chandelier. The "art" literally looked like someone threw paint on a tarp, and I'm also saying this as an abstract art lover. The entire seating arrangement was away from the window with the view, and the stair railings were not attached properly. To be honest, I'm seriously side-eying Ty for this. Team Taniya: Another lowkey couple with a "git er done" attitude. This is my first time seeing Taniya work, and she's very much the "throw suggestions out here and there but ultimately have the couple make their own decisions" type which is nice. I think turning around the staircase was a great idea, as it made room for another sitting area. I liked the fireplace, and using an old piece of driftwood as a statement piece was another good idea. The only fly in the ointment was the steel ropes on the railings were placed in a way that young kids can climb and create a hazard, plus their railings were kinda loose too. Overall, they deserved the win. Other Thoughts: I loved Mike Holmes calling people out for shoddy work, as he should. Mina wins for her attention to detail and noticing things that might have been overlooked. Overall, not a bad show. I'll watch again!

I do understand the behind the bedsheet, sorry drop cloth hanging. The black and white paint mimics the quartzites countertop they had installed on their island with the bold black markings. I don't mind the idea I mind the horrendous execution of that idea.
Also if you notice in the photo that all the furniture seems pushed over by the curtains leaving this huge empty area below the hanging.
