Best speech of the night - Olivia Coleman!
Loved Rami's speech also as well.
You know...if they cut down on the number and length of commercials, they would have come in at 3 hours.

I didn't see the show as I was at work but I appreciate everyone's updates. Now that I'm home I can catch up. I'm curious Kao who do you think deserved best actor?

Not really any surprises here. I'd read some predictions earlier and they were dead-on with pretty much every category. I'm glad the wealth was spread around a bit, although I would have preferred to see Willem Dafoe or Viggo Mortensen win over Rami, who I just don't care for (sorry, I've always found him creepy).
I figured Cuaron would win for Best Director, but I was pulling for Spike. He's a legend.

Did anyone notice when during Best Actress was being announced and Frances McDormand looked to her right and said, "No, no" when asked if she had anything to say. Anyway, I think she gave L. GaGa the stinkeye as she had her nose pointed in her direction.

I'm looking forward to seeing Period. End of Sentence on Netflix. I'm also going to make it my business to see Roma, Green Book, and BlackKlansman.

I was so hoping they'd show up..lol I was pleased for everyone, a little upset for Glenn Close, but so pleased for Olivia. I'm usually pleased, because they put in a lot of work for these wonderful performances.. It sounded like Rami had to work to be Freddie. That's a CD , hubby and I will ply a few times..

-Lee was visibly upset when Green Book was named Best Picture at the end of the evening. He tried to leave the theater while the Green Book team was onstage, and reluctantly returned to his seat and began conversing with BlacKkKlansman producer Jordan Peele, who also declined to applaud the Best Picture winners. Green Book has been a controversial film among critics, for its treatment of race and for drawing comparisons with Driving Miss Daisy. Lee recently said it still stung that his Do the Right Thing was snubbed in the year that Driving Miss Daisy won Best Picture.

The family of Dr. Shirley (the character Mahershala Ali played) was VERY unhappy with how the story was told. IIRC, MA actually apologized to them. I can understand why Spike and Jordan Peele were unhappy and I doubt they would have reacted that way to any other film winning.
This gives a good rundown of the issues people had with the movie and stuff like this is why I didn't and probably won't see the movie, in spite of the fact that I'm a fan of the two leads: time.com/5527806/green-book-movie-controversy/Spike leaping into Samuel L. Jackson's arms =

Jackson's arms = I started watching it because I thought that a movie based on the actual Green Book would be an excellent idea. To my horror, it turned out to be the typical "I'm racist! No wait, I met a magical Knee-gro and I'm not racist anymore! I can't be racist because I have One Black friend" trope. Granted, a lot of people eat up that crap, but I turned it off halfway thru.
Then I found out that the director and writer refused to get any feedback from Don Shirley's family because they wanted to make "their own version" of what Don Shirley went through. Which just happened to be the story told through the eyes of Viggo Mortensen character. Also, some things they just made up for the movie. I don't blame Spike Lee one bit for being upset; I seriously doubt he would have had that reaction if he had lost to Roma, but a crappy race-bait movie like Green Book? Ugh.

I think he was angry he didn't win best picture...

I'm going to disagree with you on that, FM. I think he was upset about which film won Best Picture. It was about the handling of the subject in Green Book, which Kao summarized nicely, that I think he is taking issue with. I've always found him to be someone who truly LOVES film and who uses the medium to tell his truth. Sometimes his truth is too intense for some, and it's not nicely packaged for people who don't want to be made to feel uncomfortable.
Upthread, I mentioned some round tables I watched in SoCal. They actually are not from The Hollywood Report; they're from the LA Times (THW also did round tables, which I haven't watched yet, but I'm sure are good too) Actors:https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/envelope/la-en-mn-actors-roundtable-20181204-20181122-ntazbpfqpnbbpnraaoo3gcxjvm-story.html

GaGa the stinkeye as she had her nose pointed in her direction. I took her saying "no, no" as a self deprecating joke making fun of how outspoken she was in acceptance speeches last year. I didn't read anything further into it.

Jackson's arms = I agree with all of this, and would add to this Peter Farrely's acceptance speech at the Golden Globes where he basically declared that racism can be resolved if we just talk to each other. When you consider all the work Spike has done passionately in terms of race relations his entire life, and the racism he's lived as opposed to just reading about, I can understand why he would not want to listen to more of that. Fortunately someone must have gotten to Farrely after that Golden Globes misstep and he's resisted talking like that since then. But looking at the sharp contrast between the two movies, and Spike's lifetime of work, I can understand any frustration he felt. Besides ... after best picture is announced the show is over. So isn't heading out (if that actually happened) kind of like leaving during the last encore of a concert to get head start on the parking lot?

Glad to read all the feedback about Greenbook, I have not seen it but have heard similar comments. I thought I saw that Mahershala Ali's wife not looking happy when the three white men accepted the Oscar for best screenplay. And then I noted that a couple of minutes after that the whole family left their seats. I had to go to bed so I never saw if they returned.
Anyhoo, I really enjoyed last night and my favorite part was a short about a dumping won followed by a documentary short about periods! Loved seeing so many women win. It makes it so much more enjoyable when we see more diversity.
Oh! Also, what chemistry does Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper have???? If I was his GF I'd be sooooo jealous.

I've been looking over footage and photos of last night's event. I see things trending toward costumes rather than stunning apparel. Ugh.
That being said... Helen Mirren, Constance Wu, and Lucy Boynton all knocked it out of the park with beautiful/complimentary color, hair, makeup, and jewelry.
