The correspondents dinner is a roast-whoever is president and their staff are targets. Most presidents attend, taking part in the roast. Hosts are expected to cross the line. IN fact, every other year it seems a host is in hot water, via the media perception. Roasts are not polite r proper. The zingers are intentionally sharp and mean. That's the way these dinners go. As for Kathie Griffith, her career never recovered from that awful 'joke.' She lost lucrative contracts and hosting duties. That 'joke' rightfully offended people of all political persuasions. So, she's certainly been punished and dropped because of it. It's important to note Rosanne was hired for the reboot even though she has a long documented history of making offensive and racist comments. The issue became untenable once those comments became so extreme they offended one of the writers, the cast and the viewers. Naomi Wolfe has signed on to Netflix. Like Rosanne, she's being given a shot at a show. Despite her outrageous comments. Or because of them. She is a social commentator with a viewpoint. If her remarks turn out to offend enough viewers, as Rosanne's comments did, she will go the way of Rosanne. I wouldn't watch Wolfe if they paid me, and that voice! Ugh!

There are dumb things and then there are racist things. Exactly!!! This comment was no joke. It wasn't even a 'dumb thing'! It was an out-and-out derogatory racist slur (made in a political context, no less), made against someone she disagreed with, politically and racially. That is inexcusable! And to me, it's twice as inexcusable for her to try to weasel her way out of saying what she did, by calling it a joke. That's a double insult, not only an insult to the person she slurred, but an insult to all of us who are not stupid enough to believe that this was just a joke.

sara gilbert @thesaragilbert · 3h This is incredibly sad and difficult for all of us, as we’ve created a show that we believe in, are proud of, and that audiences love— one that is separate and apart from the opinions and words of one cast member.
Best tweet for today...

From the CNN website, Michael Fishman's statement reads: "While I am going to miss being part of the ABC family, I believe that to sit back or remain silent in an attempt to distance myself from the actions/statements of others would unintentionally endorse or placate those statements which I find truly offensive," Fishman added. "In this moment it is important to be clear. We must stand-up against; bias, hatred, bigotry and ignorance to make society a better place for all." I would have retitled the show to Without Roseanne and kept it running, at least for another season, for the sake of the remaining cast and crew. It's supposed to be about real life, right? Well, as we all have been witnessing on a daily basis - UNFORTUNATELY - it doesn't get any more real than this. Sigh.

I think she made a ugly joke on twitter and that was a huge mistake. This was beyond a joke. Jokes 'generally' are ... a thing that someone says to cause amusement or laughter, especially a story with a funny punchline ... from the dictionary. What RB tweeted out was not a JOKE. At all. It was BULLYING with the hopes of gaining attention and RB certainly did that .... ' so RB, are you happy now'???

On a side note, I was surprised that the actress who plays Roseanne and Jackie's mother is 90? She looks younger than that.

I don't see the correlation between an insult made at a roast and a tweet from someone not at a roast, calling a woman of color,an ape. A new mother, at that. The former is an event in which everyone knows they may be a target of crass comments. The latter is not that. Which is why the comment, in a long line of inflammatory, crude comments, made by the same person, has upset so many people. And the receiver of the crass comments is not part of a roast or even in public life, anymore. ETA: I don't think roasts are funny. I was putting the Sanders comments in context.

Wow. This is the first time in a while that I've seen someone get their comeuppance so soon in a while!
For the past five years, this bigot has been saying racist things about Blacks, Jews, Latinos, etc on her twitter, as well as posting pics of her dressed like Hitler pulling burned "Jewish" cookies out the oven. That's why ABC made her scrub her twitter of offending content, and her children changed her password and wouldn't let her have access to it. But like most racists, she just couldn't control herself. Now, a bunch of decent people who work behind the scenes are out of work because of this bigot. As for the "she's not racist; she's a comedian!" crowd, White people have compared Blacks to apes and monkeys since the 1700s. It's not a joke to a LOT of people; try not being obtuse.
She got dumped by her agent as well. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

People used to love the Rosanne show, and reboots are popular. Which makes me wonder how many advertisers were going to pull out of ABC over this bigot's comments. It must have been a lot for the show to get the gate so quickly...

And nothing from RB ....... I thought she had apologized..her show has been cancelled, not sure what else there is to say.. Oh do you have a link? Or are you referring to the apology to Valerie Jarrett, Obama's Senior Advisor? I am wondering about an apology to her TV family.....the same family that all lost their jobs today.

I am just sick. What is wrong with her? I’d like to think this will open her eyes to the fact that her actions have consequences. She has ruined the comeback for all of her costars and staff.

GUYS, there's a reason we did away with the Current Events forum! NO POLITICAL TALK, PLEASE. Any posts about politics from here on out, will be deleted.
One of the oddest things about Roseanne making those comments about Valerie Jarret, in particular, is they could be sisters. Check her out in this video on TMZ:

It’s too bad that the rest of the cast and crew have to suffer because of the bigoted lout but they knew what she was all about and if they didn’t say or do anything then they are as complicit as she is.

Right!? I was scrolling down the page and stopped because I thought Roseanne maybe made a public statement (I mean, one NOT on Twitter!)
Looks like the young actress playing her granddaughter was about to quit when she got word of the cancellation.
More statements:
Two of my favorites reactions today: She owes all of those people a public apology. Her actions put them all out of work. Remember when Jay Leno took a big pay cut to prevent any further layoffs on The Tonight Show? That's what it looks like when the star of the show cares about his co-workers....and I say this as someone who was never a big JL fan. I just thought that was a classy move. Roseanne could take a lesson.

I don't think that's fair. The overwhelming majority of people who worked on the show were people who made "normal people salaries" for their work. Do you expect the key grip to stand up to the STAR of the show and call out racism? Because what would happen is that she would demand they be fired. They'd be marched off the lot by security and a new one would be in their place in an hour. It's great if you have the power to stand up to someone like that, but most people on that show had no power. Them standing up to her would only have resulted in them losing their jobs sooner.

All of those grips and assorted trades have some of the best union representation there is. I doubt their shop foremen would let that happen. For one thing the other union members would most likely not walk on as a replacement in a situation such as you mention.

I am sad that the show will not go on. I was looking forward to more episodes that reminded me of good times spent watching with my family - when my family was my mom and siblings and not my husband and children. I liked the supporting characters more than Roseanne, but I agree that without her the show wouldn't last long. I'd heard about her Twitter diarrhea before, but I didn't read any of them before the one that caused all the brouhaha today. I am ashamed of her; for her. I agree with their decision to cancel. I think that a few of the actors would not have returned even if ABC didn't pull the plug. Wanda was just the beginning.
I was born a Becky but always thought I acted more like a Darlene. RIP to my favorite show. Ever.

Just turned on AC and its (obviously) being discussed there.
One contributor to the RB story stated that all the WRITERS for SEASON 2 started back just this morning to start on RB's S2.
Then they were told they were done. Fired. Show has been officially canceled.
ALSO its being reported that RB has been working on a STATEMENT.
They are not sure if we will hear it tonight or tomorrow.
