It feels like this show is more set up for the participants to do a follow-up episode vs. us seeing a ton of progress in one episode. It is a bit frustrating to watch 2 hours and only see them get surgery right at the end. In the early seasons, it wasn't unusual for them to get surgery within a few months. I am glad they did get it together in the end, but I also hope we see a follow-up episode down the line. I had to laugh at Geno's mom talking about how obesity runs in the family....while they show her cooking a giant bunch of food. Dr. Now: "Who gave you that frickin' idea?" He's getting sassy and I'm here for it!

OMG, what a waste of 2 hours. Totally the opposite of last week's episode. How did she gain weight and actually think she was doing well?

But she was trying so hard! (while eating fried fish and French fries)
And exercising! (flapping her hands and doing a few arm circles)
The scale was wrong, healthy food was like dog food, ow mah leg, ow my lymphoma...the excuses just kept going. Dr. Now AND her boyfriend/prison boo had her clocked, though. I'd be surprised if she makes it to the end of 2023 with her heart starting to give out already.

I am not watching this season but I work in retail and it blows my mind at the amount of morbidly obese people that come in the store. The sad part is a majority of them are young girls and some young guys. I talk about this with my co-workers all the time. I know some probably have thyroid issues but at that age you would think they would want to be less heavy. I could stand to lose 30+ lbs. but If I see the scale climbing I get on it and lose some weight or cut back on my food intake. Right now I need to cut back as it does affect me.

Ok, I popped it on and watched just long enough to see her scooting around in a wheelchair with no panties on, and getting up to use the toilet....no Ma'am. :/ This is what I was talking about in an earlier comment when it seems like they target certain "types" for the show, because seeing stuff like really isn't necessary. Seeing it in the first five minutes of the show is a turnoff. I mean, are there not any obese people who actually know how to dress themselves and are clean who audition for this?

They used to have people who did dress nicely and are clean. Every so often the still do, but everyone wants the train wrecks which people watch.

You don't even have to work retail to see people who are morbidly obese. Now, I'm not bone thin and like you, I could stand to lose a bit of weight, but I keep an eye on it. I'm 57 and wear a women's 12 and M/L. I can even wear juniors 14 and XL depending on the style. I honestly blame junk food. My family is from the Dominican Republic. I still have family there and would vacation yearly with them since I was 3. Back in the days before all the fast food places showed up, people weren't that big from what I remember. You had some but for the most part, people ate whole and healthy foods that weren't loaded with preservatives. Fast forward to 2002 when I was last there. There was fast food on every corner, Burger King, Dunkin', Pizza Hut, chains like Outback..... I noticed a heck of a lot more people who were morbidly obese then in past years. Weight loss surgery has taken off. Everyone is doing it. My cousin's daughter died of complications from it.

I can also say the preservatives that are in our food...is no good. When I went to Europe I actually LOST weight and I was eating GOOD, like Döner kebob, Swiss Food, prepared fish, Currywurst, cheese, a traditional French lunch (a three hour affair over several courses), assorted British food, etc. The weight loss could not be explained away by walking more, etc because I walk a lot already. I've also had friends who visited Tokyo and Paris who ate their weight in food and experienced the same thing. Other countries simply don't put the crap in their food like the U.S. does.
I also blame things like food deserts and urban planning. There's a lot of communities where there's a fast food restaurant on literally every corner but a grocery store with fresh food and vegetables is no where to be seen, or miles away from the house. It's cheaper to eat fattening foods but so expensive healthwise.

I haven't always watched this show, so I'm not sure if her first go around with Dr. Now was ever aired on TV. Apparently, when she first went to see Dr. Now, she was in the 400+ pound range. I don't know what happened back then - how much weight she had lost prior to surgery, if she even had surgery, and what happened after that. But here she is a few years later having gained back whatever weight she had lost and gained an additional 100+ pounds.
I will say I was kind of surprised that she was the primary driver of her van. Usually the patient cannot fit into the front seat and between the seat and the steering wheel.

I was under the impression that she had gone to Dr Now, but he told her to lose weight and she never came back and had no surgery. 400+ pounds wouldn't have gotten her on the show.
I was surprised to see her driving too. Guessing the prison guy didn't have a valid drivers license? She did mention that she was driving with her tippy toes because she couldn't move the seat up any further.

I'm under 5' tall . . . no problem with me reaching the pedals. I don't think her legs were the problem.

Maybe Dr Now just wanted to show off his new robot….lol I'm continually amazed that Dr. Now is still practicing medicine, at his age (78)! The way he shuffles around, always makes me think he won't last much longer, but yet he's always there, on the next episodes! I think he must be exhausted when he spends long hours on his feet, especially during those long operations.

Dr. Now shuffling over to the machine and saying "I'm going to transition to robot" in his accent makes me giggle every time.

*whew* I didn't think we were going to have a success story after starting out with Wess eating two month's worth of breakfast burritos nude in his kitchen with the fan "drying" him off, but he eventually lost a lot and got surgery. I hope they do a follow up with him and he's up on the stage like he always dreamed of.

How far have we fallen here? Naked fat man stuffing his face with burritos. Is that rock bottom? Are we in the sub-basement yet? Those poor camera guys.
At least Wess didn't make a ton of excuses. He only lost 10 lbs at that first weigh-in, but admitted it was because he cheated on the diet. At least he got on the program and lost the weight he was supposed to on his second try. It's almost always the case that when they get upset about family members taking control and "telling me what to do," it's because they don't want to stick with the diet plan. I'm glad he was able to get it together. I hope we get a follow-up episode with him.
That lymphedema mass was really hard to look at.

It's beginning to come across as very "look at these fat ass people....aren't they fat 'n gross?" and it's very uncomfortable. We should be seeing people dressed going about their day, not naked in the kitchen eating burritos or lolling about with no panties on going to the toilet. This show is really leaning into the "fat as a spectacle" aspect instead of being inspirational and quite frankly it's not appealing for me. If these people were smaller we would never see this crap. Obese people catch a LOT of garbage in their lives, why make it worse?
I got the same feeling of discomfort while watching "The Whale" and even though Brendan Frasier does a marvelous job that elevates the material there was a constant undercurrent of "look at this disgusting...thing, we don't even consider him a person, lol" in the movie that was NOT appealing and hard to watch.

I'm a bit of a cynic where this show is concerned. I lean towards the "fat as a spectacle" theory. Like, "look how far these people have fallen" and a little, "aren't you glad this isn't you?" So much of that first segment of them at home feels really exploitative and sad. You really see how very little dignity these people are left with. It's my second least favorite thing about this show, after the ones who are nasty to Dr. Now.
Wess is looking good, although that specific "after" photo makes him look thinner than he is. The other pics on his IG seem more accurate. He's lost 220 lbs, which is incredible. He's got a long way to go, but he seems to have the right attitude.

Another waste of 2 hours. WHY would he sign up for this show if he thinks he knows better, wants to do it HIS way (which, apparently, involves gaining weight) and doesn't want WLS? Whenever we get another one of these types of episodes, I think of the person who could have taken this spot and who would have actually benefited from the opportunity.
What was up with that reference to the 16-year old girl he's "recently become close to?" WTF?

Ugh, this guy. Mark was 43 but acted 12, disrespectful of his parents and sister (what was with everyone calling each other "stupid"?), and thought he knew better than the doctor with decades of experience. No, sir, you're not going to lose 500 lbs. on your own. No wonder he didn't want to move to Houston, he had it made at his parent's house. Living rent free, mommy cooking whatever he wanted and cleaning up after him...gross. The whole family had a weird dynamic. That stuff at the end about chatting up a 16 year old girl online - someone better check this guy's hard drive. Creep.

I think I'm going to skip this episode and watch the one last week with Syreeta. I started watching it last week and at least she seemed to have a handle on why she was eating so much, and her partner admitted that he was enabling her but wanted to help. This week's guy...you're in your 40s and chatting up teens online? Nope.

Another waste of time person last night - if you haven't watched, you probably shouldn't bother. She lost maybe 16 lbs. over the whole show, thought chocolate milk was health food, and made fast food stops every couple hours on the way to Houston. At the end she decided that she knew better than the doctor and could "figure it out on her own."
Spoiler: she won't.

I shake my head at someone who is 36 years old, has three kids, but can't (or won't) figure out basic nutritional facts. "I didn't think chocolate milk was bad to drink. It's milk . . . with a "little bit" of chocolate. She had to be flat-out lying to Dr. Now when she said she weighed herself at her doctor's office, and she claimed to have lost 70 or 80 pounds . . . but when she got back to Houston a couple of weeks later, she'd only lost about 11.

Every time she said something about doing it on her own or that she knew better, etc., I'd say, "Narrator: She did not."
WHY ask for help if you're not going to take it? If you get to 600+ lbs, you're clearly not an expert on weight loss. I wish they did more with her with respect to her daily intake and what she was actually eating. There was a show on UK TV (can't remember the name) with people who claimed they couldn't lose weight/wanted to lose weight. They put cameras in their homes and basically monitored everything they ate and did, all the time. Every time they claimed to be sticking to healthy eating, the host would be like, "Roll the tape!" and there they were with a giant fry up they got after a late night binge at the pub. It was glorious to see them called out for their behavior and there was no way they could deny it.
She clearly has zero intentions of actually changing her diet. Did you see that sandwich at the end? What about the cheeseburger her stepdad brought her? She would've had to walk to freaking Seattle to burn off that burger.
Her stepdad was a really good guy, but he also needed a class from a nutritionist about what constitutes "healthy" eating.
I felt really sad for her kids, who are clearly headed down the same path as their mom AND are who are likely going to lose their mom, sooner rather than later.
ETA: re: chocolate milk...I'm always shocked that runners drink chocolate milk after their runs/races. IMO, a sugar bomb is not good for you. "A bit of chocolate" my behind. Heck, even chocolate almond milk has a ton of sugar in it. I bought some once because the store didn't have my usual unsweetened vanilla, without thinking about the fact that it definitely wouldn't be UNsweetened. It was so horrifyingly sweet, I used a splash of it to sweeten my protein shake (once I bought the unsweetened vanilla) instead of the agave that I usually use.
I sometimes think these people deliberately don't want to know these things. Do they not know how to read the nutritional information or do they not want to?

Whenever I watch these shows I have to remind myself that the eating ADDICTION is probably the hardest addiction to get over. Many people think the eating addiction is way harder to break than the addiction to hard drugs. I'm a sugarholic and it's almost impossible for me to break my own addiction.

Her stepdad was a really good guy, but he also needed a class from a nutritionist about what constitutes "healthy" eating. I would say that we need better nutrition information taught in schools/by the govt, but everyone with a phone in their hands has access to all the information they could possibly need. I've known way too many people who think eating a salad loaded with cheese and ranch dressing is healthy, then wail that they're not losing any weight. Veggies have to be doused in butter or cheese sauce. Popcorn has to be drowning in butter and salt, etc... As far as the chocolate milk, it's supposed to help muscles recover quickly after a hard workout. Something with the calcium/potassium/carbs? But this week's 600 pounder is most definitely not a runner or hardcore lifter, so she didn't need to be chugging chocolate milk. OR all that soda I saw her with.
