Right - okay...New Orleans has already played two "covid" episodes. LA didn't date their first two episodes, but the crew has changed. NCIS original is time hopping - for watchers of all three, it is going to be a strange year; but thankful we are getting anything.

We are not the only ones confused by the first episode: (My theory is that it is a set up and McGee is not actually shot by Gibbs, but hits dye packs to fool those on the plane in order to make it stop. Notice the emblem on the tail fin - it is the same as the token Fornell carried away from the dealer dead in the car.)
'NCIS' Season 18: Why Did Gibbs Shoot McGee? By Samuel Spencer On 11/18/20 at 6:51 AM EST
NCIS Season 18 is now airing on CBS, and the series kicked off with a dramatic moment in which team members have seemingly turned against team members. In the premiere, titled "Sturgeon Season," McGee (played by Sean Murray) was seen trying to hold up a private jet, only for Gibbs (Mark Harmon) to shoot him once in the arm and once in the leg with a sniper rifle.
Fans of the show who wanted to find out why Gibbs had shot one of his team, however, were left disappointed, as the events were never mentioned again in the episode, leaving some fans to complain on Twitter that the moment, "had nothing to do with this episode," and that "nothing in this episode tied to Gibbs shooting McGee in the beginning."
However, the reason that we did not learn why Gibbs shot McGee is that the show is playing the long game this season. In order to avoid setting the show during the coronavirus pandemic, the show has taken a time jump one year into the past. As such, NCIS is probably going to keep the mystery going over the next few episodes before they finally reveal what has caused Gibbs to turn against McGee.
The 'NCIS' Season 18 premiere saw Gibbs shoot McGee. CBS
From what we know so far, it seems that Gibbs is taking the absolute last resort to stop McGee. It seems very unlikely that Gibbs was trying to kill his co-worker—after all, we know enough about Gibbs' sharp-shooting skills to know that if he wanted to kill McGee he would be dead.
As the whole subsequent episode of NCIS was about the relationship between Fornell (Joe Spano) and Gibbs, fans are speculating that it is this that has caused the problems between McGee and Gibbs.
One viewer tweeted: "They will have gotten close to head of the snake but he's threatening to kill someone or the person on the plane is or has Fornell. Gibbs probably had to shoot McGee to stop him."
However, there is also the possibility that we are not quite seeing what actually happened. Though the scene suggests that Gibbs shot McGee, it could be that the agent has actually been shot by someone else, and that Gibbs is actually shooting the person who is shooting McGee. It could also be some sort of complicated plan that sees McGee fake his own death in order to go undercover.
Either way, we are unlikely to find out what happened for a few more episode. In a CarterMatt interview, co-showrunner Frank Cardea said that, "The first five episodes take place in the period of [pre-coronavirus]. Episode 6 wraps that up, and episode 7 will bring us up to a post-COVID world."

(The reason Maria Bello (Jack Sloan) is leaving the show):
'NCIS' Season 18: Why Maria Bello is Leaving as Jack Sloane By Samuel Spencer On 11/17/20 at 6:00 PM EST
NCIS Season 18 may be about to air on CBS, but the show is about to see a main cast member depart as Maria Bello announces her exit from the show. The actor, who plays forensic psychologist (and regular foil to Gibbs) Jacqueline "Jack" Sloane, announced in July that she would be leaving part-way through the current season.
In some senses, her exit from NCIS was anticipated. When she signed up for procedural, the Coyote Ugly actor's contract was for three years, and came to an end this year. So rather than leave the show as Pauley Perrette did in 2017, she is simply not renewing her contract.
The two-time Golden Globe nominee (for A History of Violence and The Cooler) already has a new project that she is working on, which might also be a reason her time as Jack Sloane is coming to an end.
The actor is currently in pre-production on The Woman King, a drama about an all-female military unit that will star Viola Davis and will be director Gina Prince-Bythewood's follow up to her hit Netflix movie The Old Guard. This will be Bello's debut as both the writer and producer of a movie.
Though Jack Sloane will leave during NCIS Season 18, viewers do not have to say goodbye to the character yet. She is due to appear in eight episodes this season in order for the show to build up to her exit.
In a recent TVLine preview of the next season, NCIS showrunners Steven Binder and Frank Cardea gave fans their first glimpse of how Bello could be exiting the series. The former said, "one of the things we always ask when we're trying to figure out how to exit a character is, 'What does that character deserve?' Sloane is a very strong character, she's a passionate character, and we're going to really have her go out on a noteworthy of that. I'll say that."

I assumed we were seeing something to happen in the future (2020), pertaining to the case Gibbs told McGee to stand down in 2019. I could tell by the shooting he wasn’t out to kill, just stop him from interfering in the planes takeoff. I was surprised it was Gibbs, but that’s when I knew McGee would be all right eventually. But, what in the world could be so important back then that would make it so necessary for Gibbs to shoot him? I don’t know?
Re: Sloan, I would be happy if she goes off to help her daughter, but most likely she will die for her country. I hate seeing them killed off. So easy to write them out in an uplifting way. Oh well.

I have a difficult time seeing Sean Harmon as the younger version of Mark Harmon. To me, he just looks too much like Pam Dawber. He is good looking and has a few of Mark's feature, but if you look at a photo of Pam and Sean you see how much they look alike. I do think he has a few of his dad's mannerisms which probably makes him the best fit to play Gibbs. On the other hand, I can easily pretend that Adam Campbell is the young version of David McCallum. He is so much like the young handsome Illya Kuryakin heartthrob of long ago. Happy 400th NCIS and Congratulations!

I enjoyed this episode...solving a 40 year old crime on the 400th episode - yowza.
Fornell is getting antsy (texting) so next episode will probably swing back to the drug lord operation.

Yeah, don't know if that is Gibbs personally or figuratively (as in we will be back to the present with cases centered around covid)? In present day, I would expect masks and shields worn, social distancing. I can't help but wonder if what we saw so far was filmed before covid struck. I kept trying to see if they were social distancing in every scene. Spent too much time shouting at the screen last few weeks. I do recall Jimmy pulling out something from a body and Gibbs look down was way off from the spot Jimmy held the item. OMG I am so obsessed with covid. I want them back in the present. Which I guess now will be 2021. I wonder where actors stand on the covid-19 vaccine priority list?

I'm sorry, but I actually find it amusing that people are freaked out that they have to wait until January 5th to find out what happened to Fornell. Over all of the seasons there have been very few that have not ended in a cliffhanger, and who knows.....maybe they had to shut down early because of covid? It's fiction people, take a deep breath and put things in perspective. NCIS' Fans Are Very Disappointed About the Latest Episode Announcement

So, I completely forgot the New episodes had begun. I had to watch the two previous episodes online. Wow, Delilah is lovely to see again! I really like her hairstyle down, just stunning. Is it my imagination, or is McGee a lot slimmer? Delilah is just as smart and competent as always, I'd say raising twins has kept her skills up perfectly. Well in last weeks episode they solved the case from the first episode of the season, we now know why Gibbs shot McGee (to save his life), and I'm glad Fornell can go back to his daughter. I'm glad that case is finally over. I don't like living in the previous year (before covid). it's just strange ignoring it. But, yesterday's episode - WOW! I think I was stress eating through half of it. I mean you know intellectually everyone is going to be ok, but will they be ok???? I liked that we are getting some light flirting between Bishop and Torres. It reminds me of Tony and Kate, or Tony and Ziva. I'm happy with it. Nothing much will happen, but it adds a layer warmth and caring to the episodes. It was a good episode except for wrapping it up at the end in about 2 minutes time. It is as if they decided to cut out the last 15 minutes of the show, and just summarize what happened so that the network could get in more commercials.

I agree with your assessment of the previous episode. At least they kept continuity with Bishop's injuries. Although, Tim seems to have come home really quick and without rehab - at least that they showed. Once again, though, Deliah is absent. I did get verklempt when he and Gibbs discussed how close Gibbs came to killing him. The title of the episode - 1mm.

Breena wasn't even an ongoing character anymore other than wife to Jimmy and I was so confused about hi losing her. It started dawning on me what happened toward the end and it is so emotional. RIP Breena

Yes, they have a school age daughter and Jimmy called in his mother to help with the household and remote schooling.
That's how the bullpen opening session began with Tim on the phone telling his daughter that she couldn't use the computer while in the bathroom and Jimmy wanders in in a manic state. The closing with the Gibb's hug was inevitable.
Oh, did you notice that "what's her name" has begun her exit from the show?

You could tell that when she told Gibbs she wanted to go somewhere to just “be”, that he was feeling subdued surprise, it was not at all what he expected from her. I saw some emotion in his eyes.... As if whatever flirtations that had been going on, was now ending. He was a little off, when he went back to his desk, and someone (Ellie maybe) asked if everything was ok. He was feeling something. So, I think that may have been it.
I didn’t really understand why they would just use the last 2 months as the basis for her feeling it was all “to much.” I mean she is a tough cookie, why would a pandemic or whatever work experiences cause her to suddenly feel overwhelmed? I thought she would say she needed to spend more time with her daughter. Anyway, so long Maria Bello! I grew to like you, even if your job description never really felt right.

I'm happy we said good-bye to Jack in a dignified manner. I knew as soon as Afghanistan turned out to be about female child abductions, she would stay there...after all - sun and sand, lots of sand. That tender kiss between her and Gibbs was AHHHH worthy. I bet they were friends with benefits, but no more.

I liked the ending, but, call me a romantic....I think there was (fictionally) something much more than friends with benefits between them. Gibbs looks told me more, much more. But, this was important to her and he respected that.
When they left for Afghanistan, I figured the final outcome would be either she dies, or she would carry on for her friend and life saver. I appreciated the way they ended it.

I read today that Pam Dawber, Harmon's wife of 30 years, has been cast as a new recurring (4 scattered episode) character. That may be a way to send him off to the sunset.

Hmmm...could be. I wonder if they are testing if the show can pull in viewers without him. I mean really, no one wants to see a man in the throes of a breakdown. Would Tim be able to lead or would they pull in another "star" name?
Interesting about Dawber; this could be the way to ease him out.

Here is a link to what is going on...
Might Leroy Jethro Gibbs strike a spark with a very familiar face whilst suspended from his NCIS job?
Pam Dawber — as in Mork’s Mindy, but also NCIS star Mark Harmon’s real-life wife — has booked a role on the well-watched CBS drama, just 18 seasons into its run, EW.com reports.
Debuting Tuesday, April 6, Dawber will appear in four non-consecutive episodes as Marcie Warren, a “seasoned investigative journalist who uses her savvy wit and down-to-earth people skills to aid in her tireless pursuit of truth.”
Perhaps Marcie will help Gibbs ride off into the proverbial sunset? Word of Harmon having a potentially reduced presence on NCIS, should it be renewed for Season 19, swirled at the time of sister series NCIS: New Orleans‘ cancellation. THR.com reported that with his contract expiring this spring, Harmon was poised to call it a day and hang up his stitched-logo NCIS cap. But when he learned that his doing so would result in the mothership series as a whole being cancelled, and many people losing their jobs, he entered talks to return in a limited capacity.
In addition to her aforementioned run opposite Robin Williams on ABC’s Happy Days spin-off Mork & Mindy, Dawber’s TV credits include the titular My Sister Sam as well as episodes of Dream On, The Crazy Ones and, most recently, a November 2016 episode of CBS’ The Odd Couple redo.

I was glad to see the pitbull episode, but, I never expected there would be a way to bring it into a Navy investigation. Harmon has long been a dog rescuer, and rehabilitator. He rehabilitates to make them adoptable. Whether that was one of his rescues I don't know, but he definitely loves dogs.
If he does what Duckie did, pops up every once in awhile, that is great. I would lose interest in the series if he never came back. I like everyone, but Gibbs is boss and without him the series as a whole would suffer. I would watch every episode though, hoping he would pop in.
Harmon has enough money to not worry about retirement, he is a 69 yr old senior, so no question he would want to and deserve retirement. But, he is "Captain" of that ship, and it just wouldn't be the same with anyone else. Love McGee, but he is not Gibbs. But, maybe that's why they let the investigation without Gibbs sort of put him in line for boss? The fact that McGee and Gibbs have a close personal relationship would make it possible to keep Harmon on in a reappearing guest role.
He is a down to earth person that has never let celebrity status give him a big head. Has raised his kids to be down to earth also. But, I would really miss him if he left.

Since NCIS-New Orleans has been canceled for next season, I wonder if Scott Bakula (Dwayne Pride), has a chance of leading the team? I don't know how Gibbs can ever return, and I am disappointed he went out on such a sad note. There is talk however, that NCIS:Hawaii is making a pilot and being considered by CBS. "Chris Silber, the showrunner on NCIS: New Orleans who cut his teeth on the flagship series starring Mark Harmon, would serve in the same capacity on NCIS: Hawaii. Jan Nash (NCIS: New Orleans) and Matt Bosack (CBS' SEAL Team) are also attached to exec produce the drama from CBS Studios." 'NCIS' Hawaii-Set Spinoff Near CBS Series Pickup

I know about the spin off and possible a few from New Orleans will make their way such as the newest team member. He admits to having itchy feet. Anyway, I don't think Gibbs will psychologically be ready to go into the field again, and he hates office work, but maybe he goes to get the Hawaii office set up.
I like that they have us guessing what will happen, not just with coming episodes, but the whole franchise.
